That's a new one on me! I have not had the opportunity to search for older church
records. My only experience was with 1890 and forward. The church did have those
records, both marriages performed in the church and baptisms. Must admit that for some
records it has been a problem when the church no longer exists.
I would love to hear what experiences others have had with this problem.

Many Ministers served numerous churches and traveled between them. Some were
at significant distance. They were called "charges". As a result, the
Minister didn't have an office. He wrote records by hand in notebooks and
carried them with him as he traveled about his charge.

When I contacted the local historical society looking for such
church
records, they told me that clergymen usually "took the records with them".
That really confused me! Why would a clergyman take the records with him?
They don't belong to him. They belong to the church! Opinions?

Obits? Marriage announcements? In what? Where?
People in the 18th Century did not have obits nor marriage annoucements.
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania has church records from that
period.
Clergymen often kept marriage records.
