Maggie,
I have been meaning to dash off a thank you for posting this...for years now, I have been
trying to find out where my ggg-great uncle Richard Llewellyn was buried...I knew he
wasn't buried with the rest of his family at Christ Church Cem., Fountain Springs, PA,
there's a memorial type stone at the family plot, but only contains his name, no
burial info...
I had been able to get as far as knowing that he was mortally wounded at the battle of
Fredericksburg in December of 1862 and that he died of those wounds December 22nd or 23rd,
1862 at Point Lookout Hospital in Maryland...but again there was no burial info...
Thanks to this site, I finally found his resting place...Arlington National Cem. He was
buried there because the family could not afford to have his body shipped home for
burial...at that time, burial at Arlington National Cem. wasn't considered a special
honor (that didn't come about until about 30 years later), it was where soldiers were
buried when there was no family to bury them or the family couldn't afford to bring
the body home for burial...too bad Richard's parents didn't live long enough to
see the change from "pauper's grave" to a special place of honor...
Again, many, many thanks to Maggie for posting the site info!
Sue
