The Internet Archive has a digitized copy of the 235 microfilm roll series
of consolidated service records from the National Archive. They were placed
there by the Allen County Library.
I've created finding guides to help you find the correct reel at my site:
http://Guide.DonsList.net
For this series the reels are in alphabetical order. Click on the link for
the series which bring up a list of reels in the upper frame. Scroll down
to the one you want and click on the link. A new window or tab will appear
in your browser with the correct page for the reel from the Internet
Archive. To the left is a link which allows you to open the reel in the
archive's online reader.
I see a James Mack in the 1st Regiment of the New York militia beginning on
page n1915. There may be others also. Here's a direct link to that page:

Subject: [PAGENWEB] JAMES MACK
James Mack born 1791 PA/KY son of John and
Mary/Maryann/Mary Ann/Ann McBride of PA.
I have done a Google search for War of 1812
and Somerset Co PA enlistees:
www.pa-roots.com/bedford/history/.../Chapter12.html
Listed companies in Bedford as well as Somerset Co PA.
Not in the following companies or regiments:
Capt. Samuel m. Taylor's Company
Capt. Frederick Hoff's Company
Capt. Jonathon Rhoad's Company.
Are there any others I should be looking into
for the War of 1812?
James would have been age 20 at the start of
1812 but seems he did not marry until 1834 and
started a family. Seems to me that a man early on would have married
before or by the age of
20 but can find nothing to indicate such.
