Take a look at "Albion's Seed: Four British Folkways
in America" by David Hackett Fisher. It contains
maps of the British origins of different groups of
people who came to different parts of early America
and describes their attitudes and behaviors towards
family life, gender, naming patterns, food, rank and
social standing, dress, marriage, child raising, and
more. It does have some statistics, but you can
easily skip over those to get to the descriptions of
how people lived based on their origins. This may be
a little more than you want, although I found it
extremely interesting and it has good narrative flow.
It is a BIG book, available in paperback. You can
probably find it in a good library if you don't want
to pay $26 for a copy.
