I am looking for information on John McNair, who was an early settler of part
of Bedford Co., now Somerset County, living in Turkeyfoot Twp. One county
history says he arrived about 1770 with a group of Anabaptists from New Jersey.
But I can't find any evidence he was a member of that church. Another
says he was an immigrant who was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. I have
lots of info on his descendants, especially his granddaughter, Margaret McNair
Frost, but I don't know who his wife was, or where he came from. Somerset is
in the southwest of PA, one county east of the Ohio line and adjacent to the MD
line. There were some other McNairs who lived further northeast in PA from
Somerset Co., but I don't know if he had any connection to them. Does
anyone have any documentation of his before Somerset Co?
PS -- Turkeyfoot is a funny name, isn't it? It referred to the confluence
of three creeks that led into a larger stream, thus having a furkeyfoot shape
on the map.
