Lorraine,
Happy New Year! I can help with that. In the meantime, let me give you this Ohio
History website that I have been telling everyone about:
www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/index.html.

Thank you so much. I have census reports, some death certificates, some
marriage licenses and a copy of Jacob Leslie's will from Summit County, OH.
So far, I have not been able to determine where the Leslie graves are. They
lived near Northfield, which now seems to be a part of Akron.
Unfortunately, the marriage licenses only state that the couple is of age.
If they gave the ages, I would then be able to determine which Samuel Leslie
married who! I know the older Samuel was married to Zulema Spafford, they
had three sons, Nathan S.. James D., and William on the 1860 census. She
shows up with the boys in 1870 census in Summit County, , then the 1880
census shows her as being divorced. She remarried after the boys were
grown.
The younger Samuel is said to have been married three times and lost 4
little ones. I found more marriages than that. I also found a grave in
Independence, IA of Clara O. Leslie and George B. Leslie, son of Samuel and
Clara Leslie. This would be Clara (Clarissa) Olivia Brooks. She married May
2, 1853 and died in 1854. There is no tombstone for Samuel there. Also in
the plot is a stone for John Leslie, a brother to the younger Samuel.
The younger Samuel has two little girls who are buried in their
grandparent's plot at Independence. Their mother was Lucia Augusta
Pearsall, my great grandmother. The younger Samuel was also married to
Sophia M. Pierce in December of 1856, she died in November of 1859 of
consumption at the home of her brother in law, James Leslie near Northfield.
She was survived by an infant. I found Samuel and a daughter, Adella,
Adelia F. or whatever, listed as Samuel Leisley near Northfield in 1860.
The little girl must have died before the 1870 census when Samuel and Lucia
are listed with their children at Independence IA. Their 15 year old
daughter died at Spencer, NE. My Samuel and Lucia are also buried at
Spencer, NE. Samuel married Lucia in January of 1864. I have also found a
marriage of a Samuel Leslie to Phebe Ann Cook on Oct 9 1862 in Summit
County, OH. Whether this is the younger Samuel or the older one, I don't
know. The older Samuel was divorced between 1860 and 1870, so the marriage
to Phebe could be his. The younger one's wife died in 1859 and he
remarried in 1864. It almost takes a chart to figure out which one was
married to who and when!
I do not find the older Samuel or Phebe in the 1870 census, nor are there
death certificates in Summit County for either of them. If I could find a
descendent of one of his sons, they may know what happened to him.
Unfortunately, James and William are very popular names for the Leslie
family! Nathan I have found, he married, but I do not find any children for
him. My great grandfather, Samuel, had brothers named James and William!
They also lived in Summit County. Brother James died without children and
Brother William had a family that is accounted for.
So my only problems in Ohio are grave locations, what happened to the older
Samuel and which one married Phebe Cook and where did she go? I also would
like to know the name of the other male who lived with the older Samuel
before his marriage and what happened to the older woman that was living
with him. I wish I knew if Jacob and the older Samuel were brothers,
cousins, uncle and nephew or what! The family has a habit of naming sons
after uncles!
Thanks for the offer, it is appreciated!
