Actually it started out under another name in the 1750s as a defense post
against raiding Indians and French. One of the oldest buildings (still in
use there today, although I think I read somewhere that it is a museum now)
was a stone gunpowder magazine (bunker) built by Hessian POWs during the
Revolutionary War. I think it was first called Carlisle Barracks during the
Civil War but it might have been earlier. It was decommissioned after that
war and was an Indian school from sometime in the 1880s for 30 some-odd
years. There's a whole history of the it on their website. It's at;
http://carlisle-www.army.mil/history.htm
One famous student when it was an Indian school was Olympic Gold Medal
winner Jim Thorpe in 1912. Then it reverted to military control and use in
1918.
