HELP!
I am looking for ancestors of my George W. DEWALT b ca 1770-1775, m
Elizabeth EMERY b ca 1775 and settled in Green Twp, Harrison Co, OH (formerly
Jefferson Co) probably bet 1800-1805. Per census information their first
children were sons Samuel Dewalt b ca 1798 and John Dewalt b ca 1800 in VA. I
do NOT have ANY idea where George was born, though a family history of a
line marrying into 2nd/3rd generation Dewalts suggests PA. Additional
children were Elizabeth, Christiana, Nathaniel, Mary, William and Rebecca.
So I'm trying to work my way through varying Dewalt lines in hopes of
finding "my George". Lines in Berks Co and Northampton seem promising, and
I'm
hoping someone has some insight or knowledge that might help.
BERKS CO DEWALTS -- descendants of Johannes Michael Dewalt and Maria
Barbara Schmidtin.
This line is interesting because the name George Dewalt turns up several
times in different generations I've found, and possibly in
untraced/unpublished descendants. Additionally it appears several of these Dewalts
married
Emerichs, which is a variation of Emery.
Specific George Dewalts that I have found listed for this line are:
a. George Michael Dewalt 1748-1825 (2nd generation; son of
Johannes/Barbara), who m Maria Kurtz ca 1774. They have a son George (birth/death unk)
who
allegedly m Magdalena Trout.
b. George Dewalt (3rd gen; son of John/Catherine Reber). I've seen two
birth/death dates for him:
1775-1844; d Lycoming
1774-1857; d Northumberland
This George is ALSO listed as marrying either Catherina Trout OR Magdalena
Trout; in other words potentially marrying the same person as his uncle
above who may have been born about the same time. And with two different
birth/death dates, who is the "third" George?
This George also had a son named George, as did his brother John/Catherine
Deibert, again showing the name in later generations.
Is it possible that one of the above George's has been confused with
another and may be mine? One who perhaps married Elizabeth Emmerich/Emery in the
mid-1790s, moved to VA by 1798, and OH in the early 1800s. His fourth
child b 1805 was named Christiana, and I've seen some descendant trees (not
all) showing a Christina, dau of Johann/Barbara, and Christina again as a dau
of John/Catherine Reber.
NORTHAMPTON CO DEWALTS -- descendants of Johannes Dewalt/Christiana Rexer
This line is interesting because of the family names, including George and
Christiana, and because several descendants moved to OH, although a
different county (Crawford vice Jefferson/Harrison).
In this case everything I've seen says there were only 2 sons (John and
Christian), and a lot of daughters; there is NO son named George that would
have been born in the right time frame. HOWEVER, from what I found daughter
Christina (that name again!) was b 1771 and last dau Catherine was b 1774.
Is it possible there was a George W. Dewalt born between them in 1772,
the date I most likely see associated with him?
I ask the question because Christian Dewalt (son son of John/Christiana)
and his wife name a son George, and Christina Dewalt (dau of
John/Christiana) and her husband Paul name a son John George Moser. These are both 3rd
generation; a fifth generation child of Absalom Dewalt/Lydia Reese is named
George Washington Dewalt. So again the name is carried through a couple
generations.
Again, is it possible that IF George was a son of Johannes/Christiana, and
the youngest son at that among a lot of women, and he left home at a young
age, would he be known to historians?
It's obvious I need to read between the lines because IF my George was
"known", I would have found him. But he springs from thin air.
Can anyone help? Does anyone have a source that might shed light which is
not available on the internet?
I live in AZ, so don't have ready access to PA files.
Thanks in advance! Sharon
