On May 30, 1691, Philadelphia Borough, Germantown Township and Germantown
Borough were erected as political subdivisions within Philadelphia County.
Although their boundary lines changed a couple of times over the years,
Germantown Township and Germantown Borough remained political subdivisions
of Philadelphia County until February 2, 1854, when all of the District,
Boroughs and Townships in Philadelphia County were consolidated with the
City of Philadelphia.
In 1786, the western and northwestern portions of Philadelphia County
seceded and formed Montgomery County. Cheltenham was one of the townships
that seceded from Philadelphia County. Contact me off list and I'll e-mail
you a map of present day Philadelphia County as it was configured in 1712.
