Hi Laney,
I am looking for Sheffler (Scheffler, Schaeffler, Schäffler) baptisms in
Lancaster and Northampton counties about 1740 to 1799. Particularly a
George Schäffler or Sheffler, born about 1775 - 1780. Based on the
conventions you mention, there is a possibility that he may have been a John
George Sheffler although I've never seen a reference to him other than Georg
or George. Also, his children were all called by first name.
By the way, he and his children for the most part followed the practice of
naming children after their baptism sponsors. Also, many of the kids' and
grandkids' middle names were often the last names of friends and neighbors.
(Foster, Harkins, Abner, etc.)

Janet,
It was a custom with German's to give their children 2 names, and then
they
went by the middle name. For example your George Schall was actually John
George, and if he had any brothers their first name would also be John. So
I
am willing to bet that your Elizabeth given name was Catherine Elizabeth
and
she went by Elizabeth.
Also many were named for their sponsors. For the birth of your Catherine
Elisabetha the sponsors were Georg Kuntz and Elisa Margretha.
I have the sponsors for the other births if you are interested.
Also anyone out that would like a look up I have a CD of church records
1600-1800, of Berks, Bucks, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Phildelphia, and
York Counties.
Laney
