Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I find today's service people unready to perform up to the standards of
other generations - the baby boomers seem to be the last to learn manners.
Though everyone should 'perform' with respect, some do not think about this
basic.
I find whenever I 'unsubscribe', to any service, I just use email and
escape all the verbal 'miscommunications.' I must admit though, I have
only had one frustrating conversation with a telephone rep at Ancestry and
he was fairly new so I forgave him but requested someone else with more
knowledge and the snafu was resolved.
I try not to judge a company by the interactions I received from an
individual. Besides, like it or not, they are 'king of the hill' at the
present.
Stay calm

Yes, sometimes we get to the point where there seem to
be no records and all you can do is use what's
available. But if you make a note that it's hearsay,
at least you alert others. Good point.

Jacob, I am not trying to be a supporter of you or Ancestry nor do I wish
to have you feel I'm not accepting your statement as true as you perceived
them. I am only saying that I have never had a 'serious' problem with
Ancestry in the past 3 years. Yes, there are concerns but you can have
concerns with just about everyone. Sometimes we go into discussions with a
preconceived notion as to why a problem exists and who/how someone else
should fix it. I have always found Ancestry to be more than willing to
correct my subscriptions SNAFUS - like their automatically renewing my
subscription to a credit card that I had the bank change due to a fraud
attempt I knew nothing about. I had to re-establish my sub because the
charge did not take. They did so quickly, professionally, and
apologetically. I also had them send me a discount for the World Deluxe
package that should not of come to me, a current subscriber. I called and
they reduced this same charge by over 30% and they apologized again. They
haven't sent me another discount email since though - lol
I am only saying that maybe if you think it through and talk on the phone
when your calm and open, perhaps you would find a similar outcome as I
have. Currently, I had a virus and had to send my PC out for repairs. I
asked Ancestry to just suspend my yearly contract until I fully resolve.
They closed my account. I guess because that is all they can do with their
system. I can maintain my tree and add/delete info and send out invites,
that is all for now. At first I blew my top. After a couple of days of
thought and calming down, I understand this limitation on their system's
part. My blood pressure is back to normal.
Lorraine, when I first addressed your concerns, I neglected to realize it
was 'Tree' information that was incorrect. Ancestry is correct in telling
you they cannot and should not ever change a submitter's data in their
personal tree. You can attempt to contact the submitter to correct data or
you can submit your own tree with info you have. You wouldn't want someone
strange changing your data now would you?
I'm no one special here. I am just trying to assist people who have
concerns find resolutions and keep the peace. I hope I haven't upset
anyone with this reply.

Agreed. On the other hand, depending on how far back you go, and if you're
pursuing poor, illiterate ancestors, using "undocumented" results may be the
only option. I personally don't go this route because no one else is
searching my direct line. I have used others' results for my cadet
branches, but I also disclose when such sources are "hearsay." I only make
this comment because the "purist" approach sometimes isn't practical. All
leads, documented or not, can be useful.

This is the answer I got back from Ancestry.com when I tried to get linkages

Dear Lorraine,
We appreciate your message.
We don't make changes to the user-submitted trees -- that's up to the
original users -- and the One World tree, which is a compilation of the user
submitted trees, is no longer being edited. The best thing to do in this
situation is to build a tree with the right information so it also comes up
when someone searches.
The link for comments and corrections is on historical records -- if a
census taker got something wrong, or if we read his handwriting wrong, you
can make a comment or correction, but there is no link to do this on the
trees.
If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let
us know.

I have tried to get Ancestry.com to correct some records, but they
have not done so, even though the people they have linked can not have the
connection
they are indicating. A case in point, my great grandfather's mother,
Janette Mc Clellan, wife of Jacob Leslie, died sometime between
Samuel's birth in 1830 and his father's remarriage in 1833. After Jacob's
second marriage, he and his wife, Mary Mathews Menoher Leslie( widow of John
Menoher) , moved to Summit County, OH with his five sons and daughter.
Mary's two children remained in PA for a few years, living with their
grandparents. Jacob and Mary had 3 living daughters after their
marriage.
Ancestry links this Janette Mc Clellan to a Janette Mclellan who died
in 1901 in Bad Axe, Ohio( Bad Axe is in Michigan) who was married to a Wayne
Lisle (but whose children have the surname of Leslie according to Ancestry).
This Janette had four children whose birth years are not entered, but
her fourth child was born in 1826, she then had children in 1885, 1890, 1892
and 1895? Must have been a series of miracles for her children to be born
almost 60 years apart! And that is just what are shown as being the children
of Wayne Lisle!
When you click on Janette's links, you see that she had two sons named
John, one from each marriage, both have the same information as to their
birth year, education and job. Sorry, but that does not compute either! They
then show John with two wives, Lizzie Pearsoll and Leone Stmnitz. I know
that my great uncle, John Leslie, born in 1826, was married to Elizabeth
Pearsall in 1853, he died in 1868 in Iowa. Elizabeth Pearsall was a sister
to my great grandmother, Lucia Augusta Pearsall who married Samuel Leslie,
my great grandfather.
If you click on the user submitted trees link for Janette Mc Clellan,
it shows a husband named Wm. J. Leslie, but her name is shown as Janette
Mclellan(one c). I have no idea of how Wm. J. Leslie became Wayne Lisle or
vice versa!
I have submitted this information as needing correcting to Ancestry a
number of times in the past 5 years, nothing has ever been done to correct
this very glaring error in linkage! If anyone knows of another way to get
Ancestry to correct these errors, please let me know!
I have looked numerous time for the supposed link to make comments or
correction, but cannot fine it on the pages. Perhaps you can tell me exactly
how to find the link. The information in the questions area does not make
any sense, as I cannot find it using that information.

I think your lack of correcting the kind of errors that I
have listed is totally irresponsible! I know you will not and probably
cannot correct a user submitted tree, but I do think it is your duty as a
responsible genealogical source to correct the linkages, which your company
made. I also think it is irresponsible that you took the trees that were
submitted originally as Family Tree Maker files and list the sources as
unknown. With the source listed as unknown it is impossible to contact the
original person who did the work and should have been acknowledged as the
source. I also think it is horrible that the original file which I
submitted to FTM (Volume 1) was put online on your site with much of the
information missing. For example, I had names, birth dates, etc. on the
original file. When you put them on your site, they were listed as Living
(Surname). Many of these people have died since my original submission.
I am a member of your World Ancestry collection. I doubt
very much if I will renew due to the problems mentioned in this incident!
At the price of your subscriptions, you should be doing everything possible
to make sure the connections are at least possible, if not probable. I do
not consider this matter as Status: Solved. I also do not believe your
answer was in service to me. It only adds another layer of frustration with
your company!
RootsWeb and Ancestry are owned by the same people. RootsWeb is free and
Ancestry is a subscription service. I have Family Tree Maker 2008 from
Ancestry that gives you Genealogy, RootsWeb and Ancestry for the
subscription price of Ancestry. More detail in Genealogy must also be paid
for.
Currently, Ancestry is trying to merge files with Genealogy to have one,
very large database. RootsWeb will remain free and has many/much of the
same info that the other 2 have but just not as much. It has discontinued
it's Ancestry 'OneWorld Tree' because people were adding numerous/erroneous
data. It reverted to World Family Tree in RootsWeb which is their's to
begin with.
This is how I understood my conversation with their sales department
recently.

No one should be "unsubscribed" or should unsubscribe themselves if they do
not want to over this. If the quote below is accurate, then the ORIGINATORS
of the material in question own it - and ALL rights to it. Even if this were
not PAGenWeb policy, US Copyright contains the same provisions.
My concern is whether we're getting the cart before the horse. Shouldn't we
calmly discuss this and be sure we understand just what is going on ...
BEFORE we go to war?!?
I know I'm terribly confused. Here are some of the questions I'd like
answers for:
Why is anyone taking over anything?
Are they taking over the previous site? Or are they just taking material
from the previous site?
Either way, WHY is this happening?
Maybe this has all been covered in previous messages and I just missed it.
If so, I do apologize! But I would also very much appreciate it if somebody
would help me get up to speed on these questions.
Once we know WHAT is happening, and WHY it's happening, I would like to
think we can begin to sort out exactly what the problem is, and - hopefully -
discuss and resolve it as responsible adults should. Does that make sense?

I DO use the IGI - but with caution. Here in England I find that as long as
I restrict what I believe to the batch numbers of films generated by the LDS'
official photography programme, it's OK. These usually begin with C for
christening and M for marriage, though there are some which are J and K for male
and female births but I can't just now remember which way round they are. I
will only use individual submissions as a start in knowing something useful to
check, but I agree, you always have to check.
But in Warren I've found something different and I don't know the
significance of it. Maybe someone on the PA list can help. I have found a batch of LDS
records for a church in Warren itself which is I003122, for Michael Edwards
marrying Anna Deitch on 6 August 1892. I'd really like to know what church
this was, and the significance of the capital letter I. (that's "eye")
Thanks people.

Yes, you can correct erroneous data on Ancestry.com as a member. I have
done it numerous times. It is in a link on the upper right of their
records.

the submissions of corrections. I know people try their best and some of
the information I have is probably incorrect but on Ancestry I have seen
some information concerning people that I grew up around to be incorrect.
There is no way to contact them for a correction. FamilySearch.org also
has some of the same issues. And you are right people just don't seem to
want to believe they are wrong even when you have the documentation to
prove it.

I think that Ancestry and others should have some sort of provisions for the submissions of corrections. I know people try their best and some of the information I have is probably incorrect but on Ancestry I have seen some information concerning people that I grew up around to be incorrect. There is no way to contact them for a correction. FamilySearch.org also has some of the same issues. And you are right people just don't seem to want to believe they are wrong even when you have the documentation to prove it.

Family Search isn't the only one that has big boo boo's on it. even
Ancestry.com and World Connect have the same problem. I have even sent
the people the right information and they still insist on keeping the
wrong info in their history of my relatives. How dumb can one be?
Joan in NY but with family the Swartz/Say and Gee and Harrison and
Webster family in Pa.

Joan, I guess we believe what we want to believe. It is too bad, but you
know what YOU are doing and that is how you write it down. You at least
have information. My Clark family was very prolific, but wow..after my
gramma and her father..we have two names...nowwhere to be found. I have
contacted one or two of these geneaology sites and the asnwer has been "I do
not input, I just maintain the website" and since I know what it really
is...I let it go. (I think that was on my Gramma's side..the part I know
and it is also on the Mills' family too. They have birthdates many years
prior to the birth which makes dying age very very impossibly old.)
Whatever..it is good to move on and try to do it correctly from the place
where we are I think.
But I did understand your comment. Maddening sometimes, this job of tracing
kin back and back and back.
Soon we will be bawled out here for having a personal type conversation. I
appreciate your comments.

I have tried to get Ancestry.com to correct some records, but they have not
done so, even though the people they have linked can not have the connection
they are indicating. A case in point, my great grandfather's mother,
Janette Mc Clellan, wife of Jacob Leslie, died sometime between Samuel's
birth in 1830 and his father's remarriage in 1833. After Jacob's second
marriage, he and his wife, Mary Mathews Menoher Leslie( widow of John
Menoher) , moved to Summit County, OH with his five sons and daughter.
Mary's two children remained in PA for a few years, living with their
grandparents. Jacob and Mary had 3 living daughters after their marriage.
Ancestry links this Janette Mc Clellan to a Janette Mclellan who died in
1901 in Bad Axe, Ohio( Bad Axe is in Michigan) who was married to a Wayne
Lisle (but whose children have the surname of Leslie according to Ancestry).
This Janette had four children whose birth years are not entered, but her
fourth child was born in 1826, she then had children in 1885, 1890, 1892
and 1895? Must have been a series of miracles for her children to be born
almost 60 years apart! And that is just what are shown as being the
children of Wayne Lisle!
When you click on Janette's links, you see that she had two sons named John,
one from each marriage, both have the same information as to their birth
year, education and job.
If you click on the user submitted trees link for Janette Mc Clellan, it
shows a husband named Wm. J. Leslie, but her name is shown as Janette
Mclellan(one c). I have no idea of how Wm. J. Leslie became Wayne Lisle or
vice versa!
I have submitted this information as needing correcting to Ancestry a number
of times in the past 5 years, nothing has ever been done to correct this
very glaring error in linkage! If anyone knows of another way to get
Ancestry to correct these errors, please let me know!
