Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I too have "ROOTSMAGIC", I find it very user friendly and priced very
reasonably. Anyone looking to change their program or just to start new,
I definately recommend checking into this one.
As Gary stated go to www.rootsmagic.com
Good luck and have fun.

Gordon, you shouldn't have any problems, unless your skipping something. I
had FTM05 but now have FTM09 and only had to pay for FTM08 because 06 and
09 were free upgrades. When you had 05 you should of received an email for
the free 06 upgrade. Lastly, if you published your tree on Ancestry or
RootsWeb, you can simply re-install FTM and then go to your online tree and
export the gedcom to import into your program.
Sometimes the installation of software made prior to Vista cannot be read.
It is not because of FTM or Vista per say, it is just that the Ops system
was not around when FTM was designed. So patches or updates have been
written. You must get these to read your older data.
The easiest way for me when my system got a virus and I lost stuff, I
called tech support who walked me through the whole process and it worked
well.
There are many softwares for genealogy but FTM09 is one of the best, easy
to use, and great support. The choice is yours.
Good luck,
Bob

What brand of software do list members use? I just purchased a new computer, attempted to transfer my old Family Tree Maker files to the new machine and I am told that I have to upgrade to read my old files. I am not happy at having to purchase new software just to read an old file. Currently I have FTM 2005 and am running vista and yes I have installed the vista update.
My point is that if I have to purchase new software I might as well see if there is something better available. I do know that I have over 2000 individuals on my FTM file and if I cannot open/read it I will be a little miffed.
If you use software and would recommend what you use I would appreciate your input.
Thanks

You should have no problem reading FTM 2005 files if you reinstalled your
old FTM 2005 program. Make sure that you installed the same version that
you were using on your old computer. If you installed an older version by
mistake, the older program won't be able to read your 2005 files. Make
sure you also reinstall any updates/patches that you may have had on your
old computer. This problem usually only occurs when you try to go back to
an older version, it should never be a problem if you go to a newer version.
The fact you installed in on Windows Vista should not cause a problem
reading your old files.
One thing, if you do decide to upgrade your FTM, make sure you go to FTM
2009 - NOT FTM 2008 which had a lot of bugs. Ancestry (who now owns FTM)
has made a lot of changes to the old FTM format. After I got used to it, I
like it - but it took me awhile to adjust.
