Genealogy costs someone something. It's either time or money,
or both. What Nate is doing seems about the same as what
Brian is doing, with the exception that Brian doesn't have a
county page. Nate has a ton of them. Both are making contributions to
genealogy.
I got the impression that the by-laws covered the promotion
of other activities by not having the information on the
mainpage. Seemed okay to have a link to it. Promotion of
materials...okay, 5% to RootsWeb.
Geocities is a mess, with new advertising possibilities promoted (as Mary
indicated.) Not many ads have anything to do with genealogy. And...I could
see that you might not be able to have a geocities USGenWeb county page at
some point.
While Brian points to the "power" of the Board, I took notice
of the power of RootsWeb. What happens if Brian slides off
the mountain? If we had put all our eggs in one basket during
the earlier struggle, it would have been a more successful takeover.
Diversity and individuality and independence may
help us considerably in avoiding some problems.
About controlling the donations by requiring that they be
permanent. It may not control the copyright, but it does
restrict it. When I loan a book to the library, I can take
it back. When I loan a painting to a gallery, I can retrieve
it. The donor should be able to do the same for items contributed to the
USGenWeb Project. If they are restricted
from doing this, doesn't it give the appearance of locking
in information for the prepetuation of the largest genealogical
data bank in the world? Doesn't it provide a greater opportunity for
by-laws to be set up legally which could lead
to a takeover complete with drastic changes. Right now,
unorganized, we are thousands of smaller targets on the horizon.
Two weeks and you're out--Hmmm. Recourse to a Grievance
Committee. I really don't know what I think of this one.
There may be some who sign up for a county, never put up a
real homepage, don't answer email....but I wouldn't consider
this prestiege because all the visitors know it, and talk
about it. The word gets passed around and the opposite of prestiege is
involved. Couldn't most of the guidelines be handled by the State? I
still think almost no power should
be at national level, most of the power with the counties and
state, if there has to be any power distribution.
What are the implications of being able to raise $20,000 in a
week? Explain, please....somebody?
Yes Ken! How did we ever get this far? By golly, makes you
wonder (chuckle.)
