STUDENT SCORES IN INTERNET FREE SPEECH CASEA high school
student who posted unflattering comments about his school
on his personal Web site was exercising his right to free
speech, according to a federal judge. The student was
suspended from a Missouri high school after officials
found out about his Web site. The suspension caused him
to miss enough days that he flunked a semester and would
have missed graduating with his class. But a judge issued
a preliminary injunction preventing the school from punishing
the student or interfering with his Web site. Some believe
the ruling may be the first involving students and free
speech on the Internet. Let's hope it's also the last.
