Hi All...
Walter.Anderson(a)cpafug.pcbuddy.com (Walter Anderson) posted on GENMSC-L the
following:
O> Hey, guys! Snow storm my foot! Someone at the server end goofed
O> monumentally, as I have seen explained by a lot of computerese double-talk
O> from headquarters; and that alone is why US GenWeb is down. You can,
O> however, get in through the back door by punching up US GenWeb Archives
O> and then clicking on the backward links from there.
I went to
www.usgenweb.org last night and had no problem.

Walt, that is simply not true. The facts are as follows... The
usgenweb.com,
usigs.org, and
usroots.com boxes were in the process of being
moved to Idaho to a T-1 connection when the snow storm hit the midwest 2
weeks ago knocking out power to thousands for several days. At the same
time, the person responsible for servicing those boxes, Dale "Doc"
Schneider, took seriously ill and was hospitalized before he was able to
communicate the passwords etc in order for the people in Idaho to be able
to get into them, and it was several days before any of us were aware of it
(because of the power and telephone lines being down). To make matters
worse, there was some damage to the boxes during shipment.
We have some of the top UNIX people in the country working on trying to get
the boxes repaired and crack the codes to get into them. In the meantime,
some of the pages have been moved to
usgenweb.org and
usgenweb.net. The
usigs domain has also been moved to a different server and those pages are
beginning to come back up as well. We have also reestablished many of our
project mail lists on the rootsweb server thanks to Brian and Karen.
The folks in USGenWeb and USIGS are praying for Docs speedy recovery.
Thanks,
nt
