Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I got "server is busy" notices yesterday and email today from users telling
me they cannot access various sites......so I guess the something must be
going on....hopefully all will be well soon :o)

I have just added six more pages to the Newspaper Abstracts of Chemung County.
This covers 1844 to 1850 so the online material now spans 1830 to 1850 with
more to come. I am sending this note to the NYS and PA coordinators lists as
well as my own Tri-Counties list to make all aware that these abstracts
include not only my own three counties of Tioga and Bradford PA and Chemung
NY, but also all surrounding counties. This includes Steuben, Yates, Tompkins,
Tioga NY, Cortland, even Otsego in some cases, also from Lycoming County PA,
others as well.
These are available from the Online Research Library of Tri-County Genealogy Sites of
Joyce M. Tice Go down to the Newspaper section and over to the Chemung
County Column to find the heading CC Newspaper Abstracts. Guest feedback
indicates lots of valuable finds for many.
This is also true of the 80 plus pages of obituaries and clippings on the Tri-
County Site. It includes items not only from my own three counties but from
those surrounding it as well. Many of the clippings are from scrapbooks by
people from all over the area including the boundaries and so overlap
extensively.
I continue to be astounded at the level of guest participation in this site's
development. I can barely keep up with the flood of guest submissions that
enter my mailbox on a daily basis. Thanks to all who help make this site the
success that is it. Joyce M. Tice
It was decided (not by me) that this particular vote was too close to
call, and that a runoff election should occur. See previous posting for
original vote count.

We also do this in Somerset County -- most of our original residents came
from Berks, Lancaster and York counties and settled first in Bedford, then
Somerset and then Fayette county. I host the border twps of Fayette county
for this very reason. Many folks searching in Fayette have no idea that
their ancestors once lived in Somerset (and have popular surnames that are
still found among residents today).

I've got the start's of one for Westmoreland County. I've got a
volunteer who is working it. It does provide good information for other
researchers.

Some statistics.. I'm leaving the NE/NC CC Representative race
out, however I did count the NE/NC region in the NC race.
Please remember, that duplicates were removed from the lists, so
the total for the NC race is not the same as the totals for all of the
regions would be..
People who have counties in more than one region are only on the
NC list once.
People who have counties in more than one state in a region are
only on the regional list once...

The correct answer is that they are copyrighted by the newspaper
that published them and fall under the same rules as any other
published article. And at the same time, the reality is that many
obits get (and have gotten for years) published in various media,
not just on the WWW, in disregard of the copyright.
I'm not aware of any newspapers who have filed suit against
genealogists for publishing obits that are still under copyright,
but if you do it, you should at least be aware of what you're
getting into.
In the case of the Observer-Reporter obits that I archive at the
www.chartiers.com site every day, I have obtained permission
from the O-R to do so. It was not a problem with them, and
judging from the number of hits to www.chartiers.com that
come from the O-R site, I'll bet my archive has saved the O-R
staff many phone calls from people looking for copies of
recent obits.

Ken,
I prefer obits prior to 1926, but will post recent ones if they are
donated by the family of the deceased. I never would copy direct a
series from a newspaper without thier permission.
Vi.
