Penny Kulbacki has done a great deal of work and has helped to make the
Venango pages what they are today. Without her there would not be the
township pages.
I just want to say that please keep prayers and good thoughts for her. She
is presently packing away her computer and boarding up her home in Florida.
As you may know George the hurricane is on its way there.
lets us all hope Penny gets through this ok!

I realize this may not pertain to some of us - but since our ancestors
moved around perhaps we can lend our fellow genealogists in Kentucky a
hand?

Just received this from someone on my Trice mail list...
nt
>Hello ladies of Kentucky,
> THere are to very urgent matters in our state that need to be
>addressed by all of us. If you have ever done genealogical research you
>will understand the need of both these requests.
>
>1. Today I was informed by Mr. Walter Shupe that he had just come from
>the vital record dept. in Frankfort where he was informed that the death
>certificates for KEntucky are being redesigned and a new one will be
>implemented soon. The new death certificate will no longer have a place
>for the names of the deceased's parents and their place of birth. This
>will be a blow for all researchers until the year of 2020 when it is
>presumed that all those born before 1911 (the year birth and death
>certificates were started) will most likely be deceased. The reason
>this will be a blow is that those born before 1911 do not even have a
>birth certificate that names their parents. Their only record for some
>of them will be their death certicate that will show who their parents
>were. I urge all of you to write or call your state representative &
>senators and voice your disapproval of leaving off the names of the
>parents and their birth place of the deceased person's death
>certificate.
>
>2. As you all know we will soon have the new Kentucky History Center
>with its state of the art library. Ron Bryant who is a legend and the
>most noted historian for the Kentucky Historical Library and an
>authority on the rare book collection, not to mention he could guide us
>to sources we have never known for genealogical reserach has his name in
>for the position of librarian if the History Center. Now is the time to
>write letters to everyone you know asking them to support the hiring of
>Ron Bryant as librarian of the Kentucky History Center. Ron has spoken
>to just about every organization in the state. His knowledge is
>unlimited. We need this gentleman in the KY History Center. Please,
>write your reps. and senators about Ron Bryant and urge them to support
>him as the new librarian.
>
>Thank you for being there and I hope you all will help with these
>matters.

When I was in the planning stage for my research trip to Pennsylvania, I =
asked
for the opinions and advice of people who are on the mailing list for Bla=
ir
Co. and Cambria Co. I must have received at least 25 responses to that p=
lea
for help and some of them were 2 pages long! I decided to take all of th=
ose
helpful hints and make one document that contained the hours, phone numbe=
rs
and information on what was available at that location, plus suggestions =
for
doing research there. I used that document a couple of times each day! =
It
was my best friend! I have pulled out the statistical facts that everyon=
e can
use and am including it for your information.=20
Words of wisdom: The closer you get to the town where your ancestors live=
d,
the more likely you are to find the information you are looking. For exa=
mple,
obituaries are more likely to be found in the local newspapers rather tha=
n the
ones found at the historical society. =20

For running down the Wheelers, I will send $3.00 more.
He and his daughter are listed as not being born.
I would like to find out if I have any living relatives or dead relatives =

I am mailing you my aunt and uncle and 3 of their children.
Enclosed please find my Grandmother. I have worked on her for 30

I have a hard time finding myself in London. If I were there I was

This family had 7 nephews that I am unable to find. If you know who

Since Tuesday when we resumed normal operations after recovering
from the cracker attack, we have received numerous reports of
anomalous list server operation. The symptoms included:
o Posts and digests disappearing.
o Posts appearing in the archives and in the digests, but
not being sent to mail mode subscribers.
o Several other, more involved, abnormalities.
There was indeed a problem that was causing anomalous operation of
the main "lists.rootsweb.com" server for one or two 2-hour windows
each day and a similar problem that was affecting the "lists2"
server zero or one 2-hour window each day. (We accidentally broke
"lists2" as we were making repairs to the "lists" server.)
Anyway, the problem is now identified and fixed. To the best of our
knowledge, there are no remaining problems. These two listservers
had operated without problems for more than 200 days each before the
cracker attack, and we'll try to provide even better reliability
than that out into the future. -B

Hi everyone,
Several notes:
First, I'm in the process of changing the background and text colors of the
archive toc's. Some of you may have noticed that I changed them last week,
I think it was, and after some feedback, I"m going back to lighter colors.
This may take all week though, as I have other things going at the moment.
Also...2 county URL's have changed:
Beaver County's TOC is now at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/butler.html (as opposed to
butlerz.html)
Blair County is now at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/blair.html (as opposed to blairz.html)
Finally...the following county toc's have been updated:
Allegheny
Beaver
Butler
Thanks,

About a year ago my brother Eric made a PAGenWeb logo for me.
He says anybody that cares to is free to use it. It is on the
Fayette County Page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~pafayett/
It shows up well on both light and dark backgrounds.

In case you hadn't heard, Rootsweb was having trouble with its mail
server. So, if you haven't been getting email from any of your mailing
lists, that's why. Things seem to be working now.

The lists.rootsweb.com computer, one of RootsWeb's two main list
servers, is still down.
On Saturday morning we lost a substantial part of the machine's
operating system. That meant, in essence, that we were going to
have to rebuild the machine's software from scratch.
Since we were going to have to reinstall and reconfigure the
operating system, it seemed like this was as good of time as any to
upgrade the machine's hardware.
At this point we have the listserver's hardware upgraded to the
extent that the server should be 2-6 times faster than it was. We
also have the software recovered to the point where we can log onto
the machine in a normal fashion and start configuring the operating
system in preparation for a return to normal operations.
We expect to begin clearing our queues (we believe we have lost very
little if any mail) sometime between Monday and Tuesday evenings,
and to be fully back to normal operations by Wednesday evening. We
will probably try to process subscribe and unsubscribe requests
before processing posts, but things will inevitably come out as sort
of a hodge-podge until the queues are cleared.
Thanks for your patience while we recover from this disaster, and a
special thanks to RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, Donors, and Patrons
who have collectively made it possible for us to increase the
capacity of the server while we repair the crippled operating
system. -B

Hi all -
Folks are using RootsWeb's main Web server so much that we have
completely filled the two T1 connections that it currently uses.
So tomorrow morning we are moving the server to a T3 (equivalent to
about 30 T1s). This will result in some downtime occurring during
the move window of 09:30a to 11:30a Pacific.
We will try to keep the downtime to the bare minimum, but some
downtime is unavoidable. During the down, the following sites will
be unavailable:
www.iigs.orgwww.rootsweb.comwww.usgenweb.comwww.usgenweb.netwww.usgenweb.org
Sorry about the downtime, but this move will guarantee that we can
continue to provide fast access to everyone for months to come. -B

I agree with Vi. The SC built the XXGenWeb by gathering dedicated cc's
to help represent the whole state. Gary has proven that he cares about
PAGenWeb, while allowing as much freedom to the cc's as possible. The
approved USGW by-laws (sorry, Vi) allow for cc's with an absent sc to
elect another to head up the state.
A good example was the VTGenWeb situation, where cc's were quiting
because the sc was out of touch. This happened during the July
elections. A mailing list was created for the cc's to discuss what they
wanted to do. OHGenWeb held elections for a new sc, when Gwen Oliver
decided to turn it over. She left it up to the cc's to choose the next
sc.
Those examples are how the by-laws put more control with the cc's.

Is there something going on in Harrisburg that those of us who don't live
in PA wouldn't necessarily know about?

I couldn't help but empathize with your wish for time to work on your own
research. What is that luxury anyway? <g> I mentioned to a few people
that I was hoping to head north to Clarion County so I could visit with
family, attend the annual Autumn Leaf Festival, and sneak into the
Historical Society's library for a few tidbits for my website. I got
several "while you're there, could you...." messages!

Hi, Gary!
I respectfully disagree with you for a variety of reasons. First, what if
the one site is on a server that is down for any period of time. Or, what
if the webmaster of the one site ignores the needs of the masses and posts
graphic intensive or other inaccessible pages? What if having multiple
sites allows people to divide the work or -- in most cases -- offers a
spirit of healthy competition?
I host sites that directly compete with their USGenWeb counterparts. They
are former USGenWeb sites. On one site, the USGW host and I keep each
other apprised of our development plans so we don't duplicate efforts.
Between the two sites, we have an awesome amount of information. Her site
is geared more toward records transcriptions, and mine is geared more
toward maps and historical text. I also host a site that competes on some
levels with the "official" site for East Tennessee's largest genealogy
library. All that site has is hours and a phone number. My site has a
map, an overview of its holdings, research-by-mail policy, copy costs, and
a personal editorial with things like where to park, where to stay, etc.
Guess which site has the happiest visitors? <g>

I have been asked to ask if y'all have any concerns in relation to the

You posted too quick. The BCGS Family Ancestry Fair which is normally
held in September has been pushed back to April, due to a scheduling
conflict.
