Many thanks to Robert Bremer for the wonderful suggestion of these
questions. Now that I have seen other candidates responses I don't feel
very worthy but I will answer the questions anyway. Good Luck to everyone!
1) What do you think the future direction of the OHGenWeb ought to be?
I think that the OHGenWeb is already going in the right direction.
That direction being a wonderful group of volunteers working together to
get information available on the internet which has people making
connections between folks seeking the same or similar ancestors in each
state in Ohio. I do see a need for more education about the State of Ohio
and how it fits into the early history of the United States as a whole.
2) What kinds of changes or additional information would you want to
include on the OHGenWeb page?
I would like to see the main OHGenWeb page as being easier to navigate:
1)Add an Index to what is available on the entire site
2)A background that is either just a plain color or very simple so
as not to detract from the information provided.
3)Add a text only page for those folks that don't have the ability
or just don't
want to spend the time to load graphics.
4)Add a history page with a basic history of Ohio.
5)Add a page about Ohio (or a link) with things like the state
bird, state
flower, etc.
6)Add a section on tips for researching in Ohio in general.
7)I also had a thought about creating a web ring for the OHGenWeb
counties so folks could just start and continue on from
place to place
throughout Ohio.
8)I would also like to see the Archives project be strengthened and
to have it
grow in order to get more information about Ohio (ie.
Census
Records, Wills, Tax Records, Surname Index from the OHS,
etc.)
online.
Please remember that the above are my ideas and I think that all those
sort of changes should be voted on by all those eligible to vote. I want
all the people working on the OHGenWeb Project pages to work together and
make it a wonderful place to visit.
3) Should the requirements for county pages in OHGenWeb be gradually
raised in any way?
I think that they don't need to be raised. Each page has a flavor of
its own and because each of us has different ideas, interests, opinions and
ways we do things it is very difficult to make standards any higher without
giving up all those wonderful parts that make a whole.
4) How would you deal with coordinators when their pages that do not
meet current or future minimum requirements?
This is a tough one as how do you determine what is not meeting
requirements? I would think that communicating with the CC's if you see a
problem should solve that problem. I would think that if you did not see
any answer from a CC in two months that the county would have to be put up
for adoption but I also think maybe the OHGEN-L list should be canvassed to
see if someone else knows what happened. Every instance like that is
different and would have a different solution.
5) If you currently maintain one or more county web pages, will you
continue to maintain those pages or turn them over to someone else
should you become the state coordinator?
I would not want to give up my county pages to become SC. I spend an
average of 3 hours/week on each county posting queries and such and I
thought long and hard before I agreed to run for SC. If it becomes a time
problem I would think about it but I can't see it being a problem right
now.
6) Should there be any limit on the number of county pages a single
person coordinates?
I don't think that there should be a limit as long as the sites are
well taken care of but if a county were up for adoption and I had someone
with one county verses someone with four I would like to give the new
county to the person with one county but would probably let the two
individuals involved decide among themselves who would take the new county.
7) What kind of relationship should the OHGenWeb project have with
groups like the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The OHGenWeb and groups like the OGS work together. They do different
things in the Genealogy community but on my OHGenWeb pages I have a good
relationship with The county chapters of the OGS. These groups do a lot of
looking for answers to questions and queries posted on the pages. They
have also been instrumental in obtaining a lot of history on the counties
for me as well and correcting anything that I get up there wrong. They
essentially help me a lot and I in turn post their meetings and get the
word out about their books, meetings, etc.
8) Have you coordinated any other volunteer projects in the past?
I have not done anything online. I do maintain 4 mailing lists and do
a lot of Free Simple Lookups in the State of Ohio.
9) Do you have the time to devote to the state coordinator's job?
Yes, I have the time.
Maggie
