Hi Everyone:
I just found the mother of all candy stores for genealogists! The US
Legistature (House and Senate) has published thousands of volumes of
reports. These are *not* to be confused with the "Congressional Record"
(speeches and votes) and the Journals of the House and Senate (minutes of
their sessions). These are background reports requested by the various
legislative bodies and/or their committees.
Examples: (I only spent 15 minutes looking)
In the 1840's there was a list of persons who had received land grants from
the Spanish (?) in Missouri. These people wanted the US Govt to recognize
their claims and many were recognized.
Lists of all men residing in US Old Soldiers' Homes (1890's)
Lists of immigrants
Lists of persons wanting to be reimbursed for war damages
To be sure, not every volume is as exciting as this, but it is worth looking
into.... the bad news is these are *very* poorly indexed. I found it easier
to pull the volumes down and thumb through them. If you find tables with
lotsa names in them, you usually have a winner!
