Subject: AOL Users Cannot access Geocities sites
To: state-coord-l(a)rootsweb.com
Geocities, in their infinite quest for
commercializing our "free home pages" has now added a
new "pop up" page which precedes entry to any
geocities site. It is an advertisement for Geocities
with banner links to other sites, which actually draw
folks away from our pages. To make matters worse,
these "pop ups" which are supposed to go away in 10
seconds and forward the visitor to their originally
intended site, do not work with AOL browsers. These
folks can no longer access anything on Geocities as a
result. My FLGenWeb Project mailbox was FULL of
complaints about this from AOL users, as is my Henry
Co IL site and several other pages.
Heads up folks...if you have your sites on GEOCITIES,
be ready to get the complaints from AOL users who
cannot access them any more. I have begun forwarding
all these complaints to T. J. Marchetti, Head of
Communities at Geocities, but they may be falling on
deaf ears...T.J. is probably tired of hearing from
ME, but if any others of you are getting these
complaints, I urge you to forward them to Mr.
Marchetti at
tmarchetti(a)geocities.com.
I really did not want to move my sites due to the
large amount of work involved in changing all the
links, relisting with the search engines, having to
FTP everything instead of using their online editor,
etc, but I see no alternative to this if I want the
millions of AOL folks to have access to the sites.
I've requested accounts from Brian, but I have so
many genealogy sites on Geocities (some are not
affiliated with USGenWeb Project, some are) that I
don't know if he will be willing to take them all on.
Just wanted to bring this to the attention of any
State CC who has a state site on Geocities so they
could advise CC's of this new problem....
I've about reached my limit...would anyone like to
adopt the State of Florida???????
