I agree with Alice, Willi, and Karen. There is much that is not so good in
our archives. It is not Maggie's fault it is there. We need to establish
some guidelines PRONTO for what may and may not be acceptibly submitted and
who is responsible for determining that status for each submitted file. I
have always felt the CCs should ALWAYS be informed when something is
submitted concerning their county and have -some- say in whether it goes in
the Archives or not before it is actually mounted.
I do have one objection to what has happened in the most recent organization
of the OHGenWeb Archives. Some Civil War roster files have been moved from
my county's Archives to some catch-all for the whole state with no mention
at all in the TOC for my county that all those men in those particular
companies enlisted from my county. There is nothing in the file themselves
to explain where the men came from because that information is not part of
the rosters themselves. You just have to KNOW where the men came from
because the companies were mustered at Camp Chase or Camp Dennison and not
in the county where the men actually enlisted. That is the reason they were
transcribed and placed in my county Archives - not to enhance someone's
general historical perspective of the war from Ohio's persepctive but to
indicate where those -particular- men came from amnd where to find further
information about them and their families.
Those company lists have no genealogical meaning if there is no indication
where the men lived when they enlisted. What use is that data now in the
Ohio Archives? How do people who use the search engine and find the data
know where to go for further information? How do they find the county page
where actual genealogical data is presented for some of those men? How will
they easily find the county where their families lived to find others
researching that surname? I think it was a big mistake to remove those
entries from the county TOCs even if the archivist wanted to list/index them
again as military records. In fact, as military records, I deliberately
expunged the military details since I was only interested in ages and dates
of enlistment not their miltary careers.

IMHO, The Archives should be for "original" or microfilmed
copies of the
original records, not for books unless the copyright has expired or there
is express written permission from the copyright holder to put these on the
Archives. The person accepting the materials should be responsible to
check with the submitter as to whether this is copyright-free or if
permission is given, whether it be the CC, SC, or Archives person. If we
as CC's are accepting material, then it's up to us to be sure it is okay
and not infringing. A statement of same, with the name and address (email
or snail mail) of the copyright holder should be included with the
submission.
I have read the other responses regarding "advertising" for the Gen.
Societies, and I do agree there as well. If I know that my ancestors are
featured prominently in a publication, I will more than likely buy it. If
there is only a line or two written about them, I'm not going to want to
spend money just for that little blurb.
