This announcement is being made to introduce to you a new list. This new
list is NOT a replacement for the long-established DCO Discussion list we
all know and love <grin>. The new list is supplementary to the DCO List.
The new list is ONLY for transcriptions of documents and COMPLETED family
group information. It will be moderated (see detailed description below).
I am displaying the full text of the new Welcome message for the list. If
you join the list, you will get essentially the same message, but some of
you may not want to subscribe and yet send some messages to the new list.
You will be able to view the message archives at Rootsweb so you do not need
to subscribe to the new list to find what has been posted. [But we may have
to wait a bit until the final version of the Threaded Archives are available
which I will announce when it has been completed].
The main pupose is to provide a place that is archived for transcriptions of
documents. See detailed explanation below. Please note that general
discussions should continue to go to darke-oh(a)indiana.ed the DCO
Discussion List.
For example, some of you type obituaries or census extractions or do lengthy
lookups. Now we send those to the DCO List, but it is not archived and our
work/effort is lost to new members of the list. However, there are times
when a non-archived list is EXACTLY the right place to share current data
about living people or materials which are protected by copyright,
contemporary news, weather, etc. That is, there is ample room for both
lists. They do not do the same things.
What I will suggest is that those who regularly send transcriptions of
documents (example types listed below) to the DCO list may now CC: (copy)
the message to the OHDARKE list so all that information is archived.
Here is the Welcome message you would receive if you subscribed in Mail Mode....
Welcome to the OHDARKE mailing list! You are currently
subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will
receive every posting made to this OHDARKE list as a
separate e-mail. The directions on how to change to
digest mode are given below. To visit the searchable
Archives of this list, see
http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl You
must provide the list name "OHDARKE" (without quotes).
This is not a discussion list. The basic purpose of
this list is to collect transcribed documents (and
sections of documents) for archiving and indexed
retrieval at the Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative
server which is generously providing the archiving,
indexing, and list services at no cost. Those who wish
to become a member or donate funds should contact
Rootsweb directly at
http://www.rootsweb.com/.
What discussion will exist on this OHDARKE list are
those which deal with the transcribed documents
themselves and their interpretation (bibliographic
data, where it was found, what does it mean, what
condition is it in, could it be a misread, what is the
significance of the document's data, etc.). You may
NOT send files as attachments or in the various picture
formats (.GIF, .JPG, etc.) You must make certain the
file/text is IN THE MESSAGE and a good message size is
about 20-22 KBs of text. Larger transcriptions will
need to be put in several mesages.
This OHDARKE list is moderated. That means NO ONE may
post to the list unless it is approved and forwarded by
the moderator(s). It also means that you do not need to
be subscribed yourself to post messages. No query type
messages will be allowed (see below).
Types of documents acceptable will be: deeds, wills,
obituaries, marriage records, census extractions,
transcriptions from NON-COPYRIGHT books (that is, books
published before 1922 such as Beer's 1880 History of
the county), estate records, newspaper stories, old
diaries, old letters, lookup reports, etc. The
moderator(s) may also accept completed family groups
sheets and/or shortish (3-4 generations) descendant
reports WITH at least SOME source documentation
indicated.
IN NO WAY, is the OHDARKE list to be seen as a
replacement for what is known as the "DCO List". The
Darke County Discussion List predates all of the area
lists. It pioneered this discussion format.
Therefore, -all- discussions should be sent to the
exisiting DCO Discussion List at darke-oh(a)indiana.edu
