I would like to request our SC ask Andrew Billinghurst of RootsWeb to
create OHGen-Discuss, to be an official OHGenWeb list linked to from our
State page.
PURPOSE OF LIST:
A list open to all OHGenWeb CCs for the discussion of OHGenWeb politics;
the discussion and formulation of OHGenWeb Guidelines to be presented to
the general membership for voting upon; some idle chit-chat such as that
found among a group of friends.
ADMINISTRATION OF LIST:
To be decided upon by the members of said list.
POINTS OF CONSIDERATION:
1. USGenWeb Bylaw Article XII, State Projects, Section 5, "State projects
are empowered to develop/adopt any additional rules/bylaws and guidelines,
as appropriate, for their state so long as they do not conflict with these
bylaws."
2. It's hard to determine the exact number of CCs who appear to be not
interested in OHGenWeb politics, because we don't have any statistics for
our first two elections or for when the Ethics of the OHGen list were voted
upon, to compare how many CCs were eligible to vote with how many actually
voted. In our 3rd SC election 36% of eligible CCs did not vote, a
substantial number of whom I believe could be safely said are not
interested in OHGenWeb politics.
3. Those CCs known to want to discuss politics and/or help devise OHGenWeb
Guidelines, appear to wish to do so on a list other than OHGen, and with a
list admin other than our SC; plus there appear to be additional CCs who
wish for another list with a more relaxed and informal atmosphere than
found on OHGen.
CONCLUSIONS OF CONSIDERATIONS:
Many CCs feel there is a need for OHGenWeb Guidelines; there are a
substantial number of CCs of which I believe could be safely said are not
interested in receiving OHGenWeb political messages; of the CCs apparently
interested in such messages there are a substantial number who favour doing
so via a non-OHGen list.
PERSONAL OBSERVATION:
Having spent some time with a group of CCs interested in discussing
OHGenWeb politics, I believe that such a group of all CCs who wanted to
participate, would be better at developing OHGenWeb Guidelines more
acceptable to the general membership, and faster, than if the task were
assigned to a small, SC-selected, committee.
THEREFORE:
I respectfully ask our SC to mindfully take into consideration the apparent
wants and needs of substantial numbers of OHGenWeb CCs, and to help
OHGenWeb become a better place, and to help facilitate the development of
OHGenWeb Guidelines...by having OHGen-Discuss created.
