My concern is at the county level. If state and national pages wish
not to carry the banners and use paid servers that's fine with me.
I take care of three Ohio county sites that are hosted on RootsWeb.
As far as I am concerned the banner is not a problem as long as the
sites remain free.
The way that I understand the issue is that TGN wants to put the
ancestry.com/rootsweb.com banner on all sites hosted on their servers.
This includes all GenWeb pages that are hosted by TNG. Not everyone
is pleased by having a banner and there is a ongoing discussion
between TGN and GenWeb in addition to discussions within the body of
GenWeb volunteers.
What happens if GenWeb decides to not have rootsweb as a source of
free servers because they do not want the banners? Would this not mean
that those GenWeb sites hosted by RootWeb will need to move in order
to stay a GenWeb site?
Other free webpages such as geocities have limited storage space,
bandwidth, and place ads on pages. So that leaves me the option of
paying for server space? I am not in a financial position to pay to
volunteer and I doubt that I am the only one in this position. So
there will be at least three Ohio counties in need of a new CC and
will the new CCs be starting from scratch or will they be getting what
I now have on the GenWeb pages even if my pages stay on RootsWeb?
What happens to the county pages that are hosted by rootsweb - will
TNG close these accounts? If they do remain on rootsweb will they no
longer be GenWeb pages because of the banner. That I can deal with
but I don't want to disassociate myself with GenWeb.
Or am I missing something?

Joan,
I think when you say "if GenWeb is going to part company with TGN I think
GenWeb will be loosing CCs" you mean if CC's are required to leave TGN/RW
don't you? If they decide to move the national site to another server other
than Rootsweb, well, that's all right, I think it would be silly but then I
think a lot of things are silly but if USGenWeb tells me I have to move my
site off of Rootsweb then yes, they'll lose me, my sites will stay right
where they are but they just wouldn't be USGenWeb sites any more. I doubt
that will happen though since USGenWeb has had a longstanding position that
CC's may put their sites where ever they choose.
If they do look at moving the national site to another server host I do hope
they look closely at the issue of bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data
transmitted and translate down to how much time/energy the server and
connections take transmitting your page data to anyone looking at it. Most
county sites will probably not have excessive amounts of bandwidth use but
there have been some state sites that have had significant charges accrue on
some hosts from excess bandwidth use. Certainly the number of page hits the
national site pages receive could make this an issue.

Sandra,
I am in no way able to pay for site space for the three counties that
I take care of. If push comes to shove I will be forced to give them
up if this banner situation isn't resolved. I have no problem with a
banner but if GenWeb is going to part company with TGN I think GenWeb
will be loosing CCs.
