Joan & all,
Re: the current banner discussion
Rootsweb/ancestry announced some time ago that they would be placing banners on all
websites they
host. This had been the case for several years on "freepages", but USGenWeb
sites are not or had not
been considered the same as the freepage accounts & apparently at one time there was
an agreement or
understanding that banners would not appear on the USGenWeb sites. The recent announcement
by
Rootsweb/ancestry included the USGenWeb sites.
The AB/NC are currently discussing the banner situation with Rootsweb/ancestry, but I
don't recall
seeing if this discussion just includes banners on the National pages, National pages
& State pages,
National Pages, State Pages & county/special project pages. I think that somehow these
are all
considered separately by rootsweb/ancestry. So, when it comes to the county pages, I think
we're in
the dark about the current discussion by the AB if we will or will not see the banners
included on
our pages that are hosted by rootsweb. But, this would only occur on pages hosted by
rootsweb,
counties who have obtained space from other servers won't be affected.
There appear to be some individuals very against the banner placement which led to
discussion about
obtaining other servers.
What I am understanding, & correct me if I am wrong, even if the National pages are
moved from
Rootsweb, that doesn't mean everyone else has to move from Rootsweb. I don't think
it is in the
USGenWeb Bylaws, but I've seen it somewhere that is the individual CC's choice as
to where their
site is hosted. I'm quite sure we have no rule here in OH stating that our individual
websites have
to be hosted in a certain place, so even if Sandy as SC decides to move the State page,
that doesn't
mean we have to move our county pages.
Like you, the banner issue doesn't bother me enough to want to run out & purchase
space elsewhere so
that I can be "banner free". I have a "freepage" account & have
had the banners forever it seems.

As long as Rootsweb is willing to offer me "free space" I will continue to use
it. On the other
hand, should USGenWeb or OHGenWeb decide they will not link to my county if it is hosted
by
Rootsweb, so be it, don't link to my county, but that doesn't mean my county will
cease to exist.
I doubt that any of these things will occur anytime soon :-)

Sandra,
I am in no way able to pay for site space for the three counties that
I take care of. If push comes to shove I will be forced to give them
up if this banner situation isn't resolved. I have no problem with a
banner but if GenWeb is going to part company with TGN I think GenWeb
will be loosing CCs.
