Sue,
What I have begun to do is replace all the "@" text in the addresses
with a GIF image of the same. It looks identical to the text and even
has the same spacing but if someone tries to harvest the address they
get the text portion but not the complete address. I also removed all
hyperlinks which included the complete address. People will just have to
type it manually but oh well.
There are other ways to do it including some Java script codes as well
as replacing all letters with an image but I found this to be the
easiest. The image is miniscule in size and all you have to do is use a
replace command to find all "@" on the page and replace them with the
text to support the image. Here is the coding for my "@" replacement:
<img src=\images\at.gif border=0>
Notice the "images" path. That is where I keep all graphics on my web
pages. If you keep the graphics in the same directory just remove the
"images\" from the link.
I am working on my county pages currently to replace the text so you
can't find this demonstrated there but if you want to grab a copy of the
image and see how it is used go to my freepages account at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysong
Go to the bottom of the index page where it says
"These pages authored and maintained by Denny Shirer < drdx(a)neo.rr.com
>."
The "@" is a graphic. Just right click on it and save it to disk. It is
a transparent GIF so your background will show through it. If you use a
dark background with light text you might have to edit it and change the
color of the text. If you do so, you will then have to use a program
like GIFTRANS to re-establish the transparent background color. If you
use a light background or white, then there should be no problem.
Hope this helps.

Hi Fellow coordinators!
With all the email addresses on our pages, including the ones
that are imbedded, I feel that we are helping spammers to harvest
good addresses. Has anyone considered this? Have you found some
way to "confound" the harvesting?
I feel bad that we are unwittingly contributing to spam.
Sue
