Allen and OHGEN-Ler's
I'm the second newest of the Ohio CCs and I'll bite on this one...
These are my opinions:
A county coordinator is the county COORDINATOR, not the county researcher,
not your personal researcher, not the keeper of the county's genealogical
secrets. The CC is a genealogical hobbyist just like all the others, only
spending some of their "just as precious" time coordinating a web page. They
believe in giving, not just taking, and they are proving it by their
actions.
A good CC will share on the webpage the info they uncover in their research,
providing an example that hopefully other researchers will follow and submit
their findings to be shared. It's obvious that the more a researcher shares
the more likely they are to meet a cousin or whatever that can fill in their
gaps. (It's worked for me!)
While a good CC provides a good example of the sharing ethic, they must rely
on "the kindness of strangers" to provide data for the pages or else risk an
inbreeding of the pages information. I have rcvd several items of
information fron viewers and have posted them all with in a day or two.
The CC needs to spend time finding sources, URLS and addresses in order to
make the site an attraction for researchers, the researchers then need to
share what they know, what they have found out, for others to use. The good
CC gets that info posted quickly, and in a nice format.
Everyone has had the help of another researcher at some time or another.
How many times has someone laid a whole line of ancestry at your feet, a
line that you had been banging your head on a wall for months, and you could
do was say thank you? There was nothing else you could share with that
person that they didn't already have. You couldn't pay back but you could
pay forward. You made sure that the next guy you were in a position to help
got a heaping helping of data.
Allen, I don't think the sender of the fowarded message "gets it". Did the
individual finding this coal mine disaster tidbit forward it onto the CC? Or
is he/she just a taker?
Perhaps they should consider an adoption of a county and show us how it's
done right.

Subject: OHGenWeb Mail: An Item to Ponder
Howdy folks:
I received the email below today, and thought I'd pass it on simply as
a point to ponder.

I am greatly disturbed that people are adopting these counties and not
contributing to the information provided on the pages.
What good is a person to a county if they don't live in or can research
in that county? Waiting for information from other people will not get
the information on the pages!
I went to the Historical Society in Columbus, Ohio today and found a
listing of over 80 people who died in the "worst coal mine disaster in
Ohio" yet this information is not on the [OHGW COUNTY] County page where
it should be. Why????????????
Either get people who are responsbile for putting information about the
county on the page or get rid of them!!!!

I've already addressed this researcher's items, but I thought you'd like
to share your insights (if any) on what you find here with our OHGW
colleagues.
