I like Holly's copyright statement. Since Cenus Records, Wills, Tax
Lists and etc are public information, they cannot be copyrighted. She
is correct about the format of the page being protected.
Example: If I were to extract a single line of census information from
Holly's page and repost it on my personal web page in a different
format, all that would be academically necessary is to post a
bibliographic reference where I found the information. I would not need
to seek permission, although it might be good manners to do so, there is
no legal requirement. There is a risk in doing this though. One is
assuming that Holly's census information is accurate and that assumption
doubt would be up to the recipient to check by reverifying the data.
(Note: Holly's data is always accurate (grin.)
Good genealogy works is not worth much without legitimate bibliographic
references.
Linking to a WebPages is another category. Although it does not occur
much anymore, ISP's sometime limit the amount of traffic to WebPages.
If many unauthorized links were made to the WebPages, the website
manager could find themselves above their maximum allowable usage.
Links are a matter of Internet etiquette more than a legal issue.
They key is not to copy the format, original authored material or the
total content and to use Internet etiquette.
(HTML or other language coding, graphics, data handlers and other
devices controlling, displaying or presenting WebPages falls under the
category of format and cannot be copied without permission)

This is the copyright statement I use to protect both my code and the
contributor's work:
Copyright Notice: All files on this site are copyrighted by their
creator.
They may
be linked to but may not be reproduced on another site without specific
permission from Holly Timm [hollyft(a)bright.net] and/or their
contributor.
Although public information is not in and of itself copyrightable,
the
format in
which they are presented, the notes and comments, etc., are. It is
however,
quite
permissable to print or save the files to a personal computer for
personal use
ONLY.
