GUIDELINES COMMITTEE WEEKLY REPORT, for the week ending June 15 2002
===
On June 9 the weekly report was submitted to the Project. Several
comments
regarding required updates, required contact information, roll calls,
and
state mailing lists were received. All were forwarded to the Committee
for
discussion; see below for further details.
-
Source Data: As noted last week, the Committee was in favor of both
recommending that LCs provide a place for the storage of transcribed
source
data on their local website and that LCs transcribe original source
data
if
possible. The Committee discussed the following suggested wording
for the
proposed guidelines:
"Local Coordinators are encouraged to provide storage space on their
website for the placement of transcriptions of original source data
relevant to their site. Additionally, LCs are encouraged to transcribe
source data themselves if original documents are available to them and to
encourage the submission of transcriptions by other volunteers. LCs are
responsible for ensuring that all transcriptions displayed on their site
are in compliance with current U.S. copyright law."
The Committee briefly discussed a recommendation sent in by a couple of
project members that LCs be required to make periodic additions of
transcribed source data to their websites. The Committee was not in favor
of this suggestion and cited the varying availability of source data and
difficulty in obtaining it.
-
Mailing Lists: Based on member feedback, the wording in the working
document was changed to specify which state lists members are required to
join.
-
Roll Calls: Based on member feedback, the Committee briefly discussed
periodic roll calls of LCs. Further discussion on this topic was deferred
to the discussion of State Coordinator Guidelines.
-
Copyright: The Committee briefly discussed revisiting the issue of the
USGenWeb copyright statement. This discussion was deferred in favor of
completing the LC and SC guidelines and will be addressed at a later date.
