Last year I took the City of Peoria "CERT" (Community
Emergency
Response Team) series of training classes, under the direction of FEMA and
the Peoria Fire Department. These classes were designed to train citizens
teams to be used in emergency response methods in case of natural or
terrorist disasters. Information about CERT teams all over the nation can
be
seen on Internet sites by going to google search engine and entering
in
the search
bar: cert teams, cert training, cert equipment, etc..
NOW FOR THE IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Throughout the series of training classes the instructors emphasized
REPEATEDLY the reality that in case of a widespread disaster,
LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT, TELEPHONE SERVICE, FIRE DEPARTMENTS, CITY SERVICES,
HOSPITALS,
RESCUE SQUADS, AND UTILITY COMPANY SERVICE CREWS WOULD BE OUT OF SERVICE OR
OVERWHELMED, AND LIKELY UNABLE TO GET TO EVERY NEEDED LOCATION, OR TO
RESPOND TO EVERY HUMAN NEED. THIS WAS LONG BEFORE HURRICANE KATRINA!!!
THEY WERE RIGHT!!! Federal and local authorities cannot be blamed
for the
delays in providing necessities to Gulf Coast hurricane victims, because
the
sheer magnitude of the logistics far exceed the normal employee
personnel
or
equipment of community services.
Our Church authorities HAVE FOR DECADES instructed members to be
prepared for emergencies, and more recently they have advised members to
obtain a "72 hour kit," (that is a collection of necessities to last 3
days
in case of disaster) And since "9-11" the Federal
Department of Homeland
Security has also repetedly advised citizens to obtain the "72 hour kit."
Had the citizens of the Gulf Coast heeded the advice to obtain the
"72
hour kit," and every family had been prepared, much of the human
suffering
might have been avoided. Every locality in our nation is subject to some
form "natural disaster," and all are subject to the effects of a terrorist
attack. A recent poll of American police chiefs revealed that 80% of them
expect a major terrorist attack within the next year. Are you prepared?
"72 Hour Kit" information can also be found by going to google search
engine
and entering "72 Hour Kit" in the search bar. You will
find lists of
things
that should be in your kit if you wish to assemble it yourself. You
will
also find many companies that sell assembled kits at reasonable prices.
A word of advice: Whatever water you want to drink, or bathe with for
three days, should be stored in a reasonably safe location. One time I
came
home from a long work day needing a bath very badly, and found that a
water
main had broken north of us, and we had no water service at all. I
was
thankful that I had stored some 2 liter pop bottles filled with water, and
was able to take a "sponge bath" with one.
Please give this some serious consideration for your own preparation
and safety, and forward this to everyone you can. Katrina has
demonstrated
that it really matters.
