I was pretty active on the DISCUSS list over a year ago - about the time of
the last sale of Ancestry to a group of venture capitalists. I warned those
on the list that it was the beginning of the end, that these new owners
would see Rootsweb as only a drain on their resources and that it wouldn't
be long before they started placing banner ads on free sites to make it
worth the investment they had in it. I was ridiculed mercilessly.
There are now banner ads on Rootsweb free sites.
Then they moved all Rootsweb URL's to an
Ancestry.com URL. The reason - to
increase pageviews for
Ancestry.com, therefore making it a more valuable
commodity.
There have been big changes in Rootsweb, and there will be more. I've been
in business long enough to know what's happening. And I've been in the
hosting business long enough to know that what I see is not good. Rootsweb
is no longer in the hands of people who share a passion for genealogy. It
is in the hands of people whose only goal is to make a profit. Once it
stops being a benefit to the bottom line, it will be disposed of. These are
just basic business facts. Rootsweb is not the rock everyone believes it to
be.
Nontheless, there has been no second and the discussions are straying from
the topic and are starting to get out of hand, so I'm declaring the motion
dead for lack of a second.

I wonder how many of you would have been able to stand up against the
hateful words of the Daily Board Show that made fun of us and our

and trials. None of that would have been necessary had we been in control
of our own site.
Sandy,
The problems we all encountered when you took over as SC I would chock up to
growing pains. Sure they and we all said some nasty things but because of
what was said we ironed out a lot of problems and you learned a lot about
being an SC. I welcome 3rd part debate on our business.
After all they may suggest something we did not think of. What do we have to
hide? If you don't want to see what other's write about us, don't read it.
No one can interfere with our process. All they can do is monitor it.
