This site is handy if all you want to do is find the physical address or
phone number of a government office. However, it does not include links
to the online website for those offices.
Recorder and Clerks websites very often include online searches of
recorded documents and court records which can offer a wealth of
genealogical information. I keep a bookmark folder of all the sites I
have visited and it would be extremely helpful if this site included
those links but it does not. Like many similar sites it directs you to a
a commercial site that makes you pay for record access. Why pay if you
can get it for free? The following are links that will take you to the
official pages that may provide free access to records:
In Ohio there is at least one site that does include links to most of
the recorders sites that do offer online services:
http://www.ohiorecorders.com
There is also this site for Land Records and Deeds which include many of
the counties not covered by the above link:
https://www.uslandrecords.com/ohlr3/
The following is the link to the Ohio Clerk of Courts Association which
provides links to all the county offices. Some offer online searches but
many do not:
http://www.occaohio.com/counties
Last is the link to the County Auditors Association which again provides
links to all the County Auditors offices in the state:
http://www.caao.org/DIRECTORY/
Auditors offices almost always provide a link to the GIS maps for
finding current land ownership.
These should cover most of the sites that provide online searches. Some
provide free access to document images while others give you limited
information but charge you for a more detailed record or image. While it
would be nice if these were combined into one website that included
other government offices as well, these links should provide a wealth of
online research tools for Ohio. I'm sure there are similar sites for
other states if you are interested for your own research.
