Personally, I do not see an issue with people using photos I post to my county GenWeb
pages as it is my intent to share information and photos with who ever wants or needs
them. I thought that was what the GenWeb mission was all about, to provide free
information to researchers. I would understand if someone was taking the photos for a
publication they intend to sell. It upsets me much more when I see someone who has no
connection to a family and has found an old family album at an auction or in an attic and
then posts the individual photos forsale on Ebay or some other venue at a high price.
These albums should be returned to the family or even better donated to the local
Historical Society Museum in the area from where they came. That way anyone that may be
researching this family has a greater chance at finding the photos of their ancestors.

You know I am thinking about discontinuing posting any photos to the
counties I care for.
Wonder if I could just post a note to the pages where images should
appear, telling the viewer they can ask for them.
It would slow these thieves down as they may not want to bother asking.
When they do ask I can then check and see if they
are posting to Facebook and refuse to send them pics. Just an idea. I
really think Facebook should shut the thieves down.

Hello fellow coordinators,
Update: I have heard back from facebook. They wanted to know if I own the
images or if I was speaking for the owners. The ones I reported(you have to
list each image and its web address and there were so many, I choose several
that were my own, to get the point across) were the ones that I own so I was
able to tell them yes. I also told them the maps were considered mine since
I am the coordinator for the Coshocton Ohio OHGW site and they were donate
to the site and I am the caretaker of them.
I have not heard further and in the meantime there is another person, a
Linda Helmick-Hepner, again no contact, lifting them and putting them on
that facebook page. Several have gone up since I sent the form to facebook.
So I hunted her up online, and found an email and politely asked her please
stop lifting the images off the OHGW site and posting them to facebook
servers and consider instead providing a link to the page the image is on.
So far nothing has changed. I also added a no right click to the header of
all my sites. I did not want to have to do that because I do allow relatives
and researchers to take images, especially when they happen to be one of
their relatives or friends, or they need a map to find something. But I put
it on. And she got around it.
I am about ready to stop doing all this genealogy work.
There is nothing more I can do. I use Photoshop CS5 all the time and
Lightroom 3 so I can watermark and embed and do all that, but ...
In the meantime I added a cemetery slide show ----in flash!
