Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dale, that was many years ago, PML (Personalized Mailing List) was geared to
being able to find posts with the surnames you were researching no matter
where they turned up and was available only to Rootsweb Sponsors and above.
but yes, a few used it to track other things. For example, at least one
person was tracking the appearance of my name back when I was National
Coordinator and even afterwards but it is my understanding that PML is
mostly dead now and can not be changed or added to. There is just as much
chance of info getting off our mail list by direct forwarding by someone on
the list as by that ancient process.
I don't see any particular reason to make the change and down the road when
someone else is Ohio SC perhaps (although you are doing a fine job) having
it on a private server could be an issue.

Subject: [OHGENWEB] OHGenWeb Mailing List
A few weeks back, I learned that Rootsweb used to have a feature that
allowed non-subscribers to receive postings to our list. Those who
originally signed up for that service are still able to take advantage of
it. And I have received e-mails from several CC's expressing concern about
this policy. They believe as I do that postings to our list are our
business and no one else's.
I have installed mailman on the ohgenweb.org domain and have tested it and
everything seems to work fine.
The interface is at http://ohgenweb.org/mailman/listinfo/cclist_ohgenweb.org
and the archived posts are at
http://ohgenweb.org/mailman/private/cclist_ohgenweb.org/ - you can see the
test e-mails that I had sent. You would subscribe through the interface (to
help discourage unauthorized signups) and you would post to the list by
sending an e-mail to cclist(a)ohgenweb.org . All signups would have to be
approved by the list administrator.
I can move our list (but not archived posts) to the ohgenweb.org domain, but
I don't believe it is within my authority to make that decision.
So I will entertain a motion and a second to that effect.

It sounds completely unnecessary to me and a duplication of something
already set up for years. We would end up with two mailing lists and
two (?) archives. I am against it.

A good suggestion was made by one of our local members; NOW that
they're back on, why don't we ALL send a 'big thanks' to the 'comments'
area; maybe even going so far as to say how much we appreciate their
efforts, etc. Ronna Eagle, Newark, LCGS

I wrote them yesterday and this is their reply:
Thank you for contacting Record Search regarding the Ohio Death Index.
There was a known issue in these records which needed to be corrected.
We can't give you a definite time that they will be back online but,
hopefully, it will be soon. Please check back frequently.
Record Search is still under development. This release is considered a
PILOT. This means that at times Record Search will not be available
while we add additional records and improve some features. We may also
remove record collections that have been on the site previously. We
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. We look forward to
receiving feedback which helps us find and correct problems to improve
the site.

Margaret Cheney, Asst CC of Lorain County, has decided to leave USGenWeb.
With all of her other duties with the Ohio Genealogical Society and two
county societies, there's not enough Margaret to go around.
I wish her well.
Kathy Gies will remain CC for Lorain County and is searching for an
assistant.

Yes, they are working on correcting a problem with the links going to
incorrect document. (I've seen that myself) They do not know when it
will be back online.

I woke up this morning to see that the FHL has removed the Ohio death
certificates link from their search lab online. Anyone questioned them
about that and got a response?
