Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
We have more for the counties webpage than just the one link to the
county websites, some researchers want the map and not the list, some
want other things...

I too fell the page looks "cut off" at the top
especially when the gray squares at the bottom are "all there"
so I feel like I need to get my browser to scroll up to make the top
match the bottom...

Netscape 7.0 shows only a tan rectangle across the top of the page [looks
like it is the one that should hold the copyright text] and if one thinks
to scroll to the bottom of what is an otherwise blank looking page, there
are two lines of overlapping text, one is the copyright line and one is the
Web Design and Photography line.
In IE 6.0.2, it appears, I think, as you intended it. I find the navigation
links non-intuitive most particularly that for the most important page of
all, the county links. The direct link to it in the box to the right of the
main title area does not look like a link and is in an unexpected place.
The County Resources link requires another step. Is there a problem with
putting a link to the county links page at the top of the left hand links
list. That is probably the number on page being looked for by researchers.
I also agree with Sheila that it looks like the top of the page has been
cut off. I understand the concept you were going for but with the image and
orange half boxes going right to the top of the browser it looks like it
has been cut off and that perhaps there was something in the missing part
of the orange boxes like there is in the red boxes. Just a sliver of white
showing across the top would go far to remove that impression of something
being cut off and I don't think it would harm your concept at all.

PS: Please do not suggest Firefox to me. As I have said before, I have
tried it and I don't like it and it clashes with some programs on my computer.

Osiyo Madam SC,
I'll do my best. Give me some time ... I'm off volunteering in my
MetroParks and I've an article deadline for tomorrow and then I can
concentrate.
An additional suggestion ... the links on the left seem, to me, to be
some condisending, or at the least redundent; i.e.
"County Resources <http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Eohgenweb/countylinks.htm>
This is your guide to County Resources."
Can something be substituted which doesn't seem to be "talking down" to
our clients?

Osiyo [Good Morning] Madam SC,
In each of my browsers I see the page displayed differently. Each of
the descriptions offered so far are those differences I see in the
various browsers. Even in the latest/greatest IE and NetScape 8
something overlaps something else. Netscape 7.1 is totally blank, even
your link to the old version is not there. Sugguestion is to put that
"If you ...." link at the top coded independently of all else so that it
shows up in the older browsers.

You can include links at the bottom of each page which can take them back to
certain page if they so choose. At the bottom of each of my pages I have a link
to "go back to main page".
You are forcing people to have numerous pages open at one time, reminds me of
those annoying pop-ups.
I won't even explore the website further as I don't care to leave open every
single page I have visited & I don't care to have to keep going back to close
each page once I get to a new page so that my system resources aren't being used
up.

Does every link have to open a NEW PAGE? Just going from the main page to the
counties & volunteer coordinators page I now have 3 pages open. I do know how to
use my BACK button as I am quite sure most others do as well.

Hi Sandy -
I rechecked again and I stand corrected. I don't know how I missed the County Resources when I checked yesterday. Guess I was looking for it to say something about maps or county names. As for the link in red, it doesn't have an underline to show that it is a link in my browser, so I missed that one too. Wonder why it didn't underline - hmmm. Thanks for letting me know. Frances
Sandra Quinn <ohgen(a)alltel.net> wrote:Frances, there are actually links to the county coordinators in three
places on the site, at the top right in the red box where it says
county volunteers, in the left column under county resources, and at
the bottom where volunteer coordinators is written in red. Like
anything it will take a few seconds to adjust to the new design, but it
will be very quick and easy for the researcher.

To me when I am researching a state or area I am unfamiliar with, I first look for the countycity links & maps. Would it work better to put a couple lines on the left side, where the state and US links are, that would say something like "county links?" I expected the State Resources link to have the county & co-ordinators list &/or map. Never expected to find the County links at the top in a very small area that was practically off my screen. Most of the states I research have county links very easy to find. Just my 2 cents.

For what it's worth - I couldn't find the link to the counties & co-ordinators until I had gone through all the other links for quite a long time, which was very frustrating.

Hi, Sandy,
The new site has a lovely photo on it. I am using Juno 5.0 and I
do not see what Sheila described. I see the photo left of center. The
red boxes are below the photo. There is nothing in the upper right side
of the screen at all. The list of resources, which is quite narrow, is
centered on the screen and to the right of the boxes.
Your text seems much more user oriented than before, which is
very nice. Thanks so much for all your hard work!

Yes, it has half squares in the upper right hand corner, with full
squares directly under them, the photo is the same size as the squares
in total as a triangle with the logos for ohgen and usgen. It is a
little artsy and supposed to make you think of waterfalls and free
flowingness, as in free genealogy.

OHGenWeb now has a design of its own and a fresh look.
For those who can't see it and only see text, there is a link on the
page to the old version which I will keep online.
You should not have to change any links for this new design as it
implemented all the previous links.
It is more organized and hopefully easier for researchers to
navigate. It is very quick to load only 5 kb's.
I do intend on making a new CC page without tables so that it can be
accessible to handicapped users as their programs do not handle tables
and I wish to remove them from that page. It will keep the same URL so
it should not be much of a concern.
I checked the pages in IE 5 and they look fine.

The Ohio Map page is now operational with all the corrections and
updates. Thanks for your patience.

We have two counties needing their links, one is Clermont, I have three
applications for webmasters of this county. The other is Ottawa, Bonnie
Walsh will be the coordinator. Other wise, we have a great looking
state with so much info and beautifully updated pages.
Thanks to all my wonderful CC's! Keep up the great work!

Perry County doesn't seem to be linked into the State map, I am still working on the site itself I tried to make a new index but don't seem to have it linked together right. Any hints on using NVU? I don't want people to be discouraged when looking for Perry County info, I'm still learning all of this webmaster stuff!

To avoid any confusion on this issue, please be aware that this has nothing whatsoever to do with the use of the Firefox web browser.
It only applies to a relatively small number of people who established accounts with a particular web site associated with the promotion of Firefox. If you are one of these people, you probably already received a personal e-mail about it.
