Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
This has made the rounds to several different mail lists (genealogy, of
course) before I saw it. If you have already seen it, please delete and
forgive.
Peace, Judy

In my experience, very few people have a university e-mail
address. Most people interested in genealogy are considerably older than
school age. And while I can't prove it, I have some knowledge that many
older genealogists are new computer users who have gotten first time
computers in the last three or four years just so they can research on the
web. Those computers will have Internet Explorer already installed. I did
not really ask in the survey if they used both browsers. I suspect not for
most people.

I just did a survey on the Gallia, Jackson and Vinton County mailing lists
asking for feedback on what types of access people had for the Web. Perhaps
some of the other County Coordinators will find the results useful when
designing your sites.
Here are the results:
1. Which browser do you use mostly?
Netscape, all versions: 37
MS Internet Explorer, all versions: 58
Not surprising since all Windows computers for several years have been
shipped with Internet Explorer installed. I'm sure people tend to use what
they have available instead or going to the trouble of downloading
something else, since Netscape used to be the predominant browser.
2. Which version of that browser do you use?
Most people by far use the latest or next-to-latest versions. This is
reasonable since downloading a new version is free.
3. At what speed do you usually connect?
14.4K or less: 5
between 14.4K and 33K: 28
from 33K to 56K: 57
over 56K (like cable, ISDN, etc): 5
Note that about one-third of the people still connect below 33K. A good
reason for keeping pages simple. In addition, quite a few people responded
with 56K. They probably mean they have a 56K modem. I kind of doubt that
they actually connect at 56K, though they probably do connect somewhere
between 33K and 56K.
4. Which operating system type do you use?
Windows: 85
Apple: 10
UNIX: 1
I didn't request a version of Windows, but many specified the version. 34
were unspecified, 13 used Windows 95 and 37 used Windows 98.
In addition I later requested responses on the following two questions
which I should have asked with the others, but didn't think about it in time.
1. What screen resolution do you use for viewing the web?
640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, anything higher?
2. What is your CPU speed in MHz?

Interesting info. The lack of Netscape and UNIX might also indicate more
people with PCs as opposed to using university access. Did you note how many
people use both IE and Netscape?
