[OHGEN-L] On-line Cemetery question
by Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman
Hi Nancy!
>>A Butler County cemetery is entering their data onto "Cemetery
Management System", a program from Applied Computer Technology. They say
that their board MIGHT allow the data to be posted to the internet if I
write the board about the advantages and disadvantages for a cemetery to
make their records public in this fashion.<<
***Their putting their data online has all kinds of advantages for
the researcher. As for the cemetery: They would find folks related to
people buried in their cemetery that they would not otherwise have found.
This could mean someone to maintain those graves where there was no one
doing so now. I can't really think of any disadvantages right off the top
of my head but I will think about it and get back with you.
>>I'm not sure that the program will be convertible. Do any of you know?<<
***If this program puts out a .dbf file of some sort the data can be
sorted using excel and converted to text or html to be put onto the
internet. If they let you do this just let me know and I convert it to
whatever format you need for your webpage.
>>Do any of you have currently operating cemeteries with their data
on-line? If so, could you let me know a contact person at the cemetery so
I could ask them their thoughts on the pros and cons?<<
***The Huron County Genealogical Society has their index online and Judy
K could tell you all about that. The Geauga County Genealogical Society
has submitted cemetery records that were input from the cemeteries in all
the townships. If you think this would help I'll give you Teeter's email
and I am sure she would be glad to help you out.
