Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
My own feeling on the post below is that we as CCs can put any
genealogically 'featured link' on our pages that we choose. This is not an
award as such, but a genealogical aid to those coming to our counties for
help. If you feel that a close neighboring county has exceptionally good
material on their site, why not let it be known?
I, personally, was not for the awards, but continue to feel that I should
not try to influence the whole state. I will do my best to sound neutral in
any of the matters that I send to you folks for a vote.
:)

In general, I do, too. I think it is too much to expect Judy to check every
page herself every week or so to see how it is doing. Maybe a committee to
oversee that? I am also uncomfortable with a Roll Call. I think we tried
that but nothing came of it. Actually viewing a site might be best, but
only checking the queries would really tell if a site was abandoned. My own
pages change very little.

A roll call proves nothing, as people can say "I'm here" and not be
doing anything with their pages.
I had a problem in another state where the page for a county where
many of my ancestors lived wasn't being maintained. I went to the
State C., and he contacted the County C., who basicly said sorry, and
did nothing about it. I think the State C. needs to be aware enough of
what's going on to be able to put complaints in context.

I can second Dave's suggestions. Also might want to keep in mind with
summer coming soon (although looking out my window here in the rainy NW I
begin to wonder <g>), perhaps we should remember to send a note to Judy or
the list when we're going to be gone for any length of time. I know I will
be adding a blurb to my query pages stating such, so that no one who leaves
a query will wonder why there's isn't being posted after a week or two.

I think it is very important that we coordinators keep up with our jobs - -
and I believe that it reflects on all of us when someone lets their site
deteriorate and doesn't service it. So - - I would support options 1, 2 or
3.
I personally feel that it is asking Judy to do too much to handle this
herself, so #1 is the least desireable (after totally eliminating #4).
If we handle it right, and just ask each coordinator to check their
neighbors counties and then drop notes to the neighbor if there seems to be
no activity - - and then IF no response is received within a reasonable
period of time, let Judy know so she can check it.
The bi-monthly or monthly role call would work in my mind as well.
Thanks for raising this topic Judy. It's an important one.

Hi Susan,
There is a query page for unknown counties on OHGenWeb and you should
also visit Noble County. Their URL is listed on the OHGenWeb page. You'll
get more help in those places. This list is more for the County Coordinators
and we are unable to answer queries here.
Thanks and good luck.

Thanx Nancy !!! I appreciate the support,
At the risk of tooting my own horn, I think that what you are doing by
highlighting a link because of it's capabilities is a far cry from awards
that tend to highlight pages with lots of glitz.

Hi All,
Susan Wilson was the first to offer to adopt Warren County. She will
announce when she is ready to have 'open house'.
The mail wasn't even cool before she was on the stick with her offer.
Thanks Susan that the others that offered.

Hi All,
I am hearing that there are a couple of counties that are showing little
or no activity.
WOULD YOU FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE---
1. Having the SC maintain a watchful eye over all Ohio counties (visiting
off and on) to make sure they remain active?
2. Having a person in your neck of the woods stopping every couple of
months to check up.
3. Having a monthly or bi-monthly roll call.
4. Leaving the CCs to do their job unless a complaint is received and
then do some checking up.
The last thing I want is to appear to be putting Ohio in a police state
of shape up or ship out. On the other hand, it isn't fair to the researcher
to not be able to expect recent activity on the county of his/her choice.
Suggestions willing read and considered.

Wally hit the problem on the nose, and my opposition to awards is noted.
My time on the computer, is not devoted to this project, and changes are being
made gradually to the page. My goal is to make the page useable to the most

Hi All,
In regards to Nancy's comments. I feel the US Genweb sites are not really a
place for awards, it's ok for personal home pages etc, but as Nancy states we
aren't here to compete with each other.
If the idea is to get expsure, we already have lots of it in my humble
opinion. If someone gets an award thats ok. Maybe try it on this angle.....
If we wanted to have awards, why not have a site, for OHIO, for example, that
honors, or uses a county site, once a month as a "County of Excellence" or
what ever. But have it connected to the State page, not have an award posted
on the county site.
Heather
Hello All:
First, thank you, Wally, for pointing out the error in the URL for
usgenweb - I changed the links, but neglected the text. (I had also
spelled researching wrong - of all things!)
Second, I went to the page this evening for the first time and the
counter IS working just fine with the script Maggie sent me - I didn't
refresh my browser - but someone else could have cleared the cache. My
only other thought is that something has to be re-set each night and
after a change in the script and the re-setting, the scripts will work.
Thanks everyone for pitching in and helping me figure this out!
Have a great week.

Sorry, but if you get one of these awards it is NOT from the Project itself.
Project e-mail lists were used to get people (a very small group)
interested, but those doing the award are not doing so because this is
sponsored by the Project. In actual fact a rather small number thought
enough of the project to even voice an opinion of Bonnie's proposal and
EVERY one of them is a member of the Awards Committee. This committee was
not officially appointed. It is just their 'own thing'. I could do the
same thing if I wanted. Any of us could. No one can stop us. But it would
not be a Project-sponsored/approved thing.
But there is no special honor to the Palmer Award. You just clutter your
page with another graphic at the expense of information, and the 'award'
does not represent USGenWeb policy or practice. It is simply a very small
group's opinion and I have not yet seen strict guidelines for who can
receive or what objective 'qualifications' will be used to pass judgement.
There is talk of voting which would mean these will be popularity contests
and we all know how such work to honor quality. Quality has nothing to do
with them at all.
I'm not opposed to Awards, but this one means nothing and to pretend it does
or claim it is sponsored by USGenWeb is untrue and misleading. When this
little group publishes guidelines and fully documents how choices will be
made, THEN it will be time to approach the CC's to see if they even want
such an award to be given. If it is -not- given in the name of the Project
and CC's, then of what value is it? And these few have no right to claim it
is a USGenWeb Project award simply because they are CCs themselves. They
cannot speak for the Project unless authorized to do so. At present, the
only way to authorize these individuals is to vote for them.
I agree with Nancy that this looks more like a way to pit CC against CC in
some kind of competition with the rather lame excuse that it will improve
pages. It won't. Those who are never nominated or never win will look bad.
Those who do win or are nominated will be hailed as some kind of heroes for
finally getting something done that many pages got done long ago.
'Improving' pages is a bit difficult if most that can be legally mounted
already is. What next? Do we award whoever uses the fanciest backgrounds
or loads their pages with animated graphics for the 'prettiest' appearance?
How about an award for the page with the most links to other pages?
I know my own minimalist pages would never be considered nor would I add a
graphic to them just because it represents an award. Awards do NOT serve
browsers with quality information. And an award not presented following
detailed quidelines for what the award means, has no merit anyway.
Oops. I guess I don't like the idea of the Award, either <grin>.

Oops. Come to think of it, my Ohio page has a Butler Co link
featured each month. Sort of sounds like an "award", huh!
Sort of sounds like I am hypocritical, huh! Oops.
May's featured link went to Surname Helper's index of some of
Butler County's reader-contributed surnames, queries, and obits
over the years. I wanted to publicize SH's capabilities, and let the
readers know that comprehensive indexing is on the way. There
was no graphic award, but maybe Surname Helper got a few more
users from the link.
Confession is good for the soul....

Whew!
I'm very glad to see this thread. I somehow lost the counter on the OH
page and was tiding up some other things before worrying about that. I'll
now be able to add that to my 'to do' list.
Thanks for all the flow that is happening. I appreciate the give and take
on the awards also. I had not realized that the awards idea was not
sanctioned by USGenWeb, but on rereading what I sent to you folks I am now
aware that it is not. The mail seems to be quite overwhelmingly against
these awards and this is what I will pass on to those that are proposing
this particular award.
As SC, I did not want to influence anyone, but I'm not all that keen on
awards on the pages either. But when something like this is presented, I
don't want to trash it without you having a say in it. Thank you for
'saying'.

That is where I originally saw how to install a counter.
I recall what you mean about the counters going bad at Rootsweb. I ended up
removing them from my IIGS pages because they weren't working. But the one
I just installed -is- working and it even record each time I change the
page! I put it right at the top of my page!! (Seeing the that I was the
