Thanks Jeannne for responding. I understand what you are saying.
What I need now to learn is if there is or was in 1945 a PO in the Portageville area that
was named "Genesee, NY".
If there was, then I need to learn if that area had an add of "38 Main St, Genesee,
The problem I am trying to solve is that this "38 Main St, Genesee, NY" is the
last known add for my missing gf Frank COAKLEY b 1887. This add comes from his SS
earnings statement for 1945. And I find no such town/city/PO today for Genesee, NY. That
are a lot of places in NY that include Genesee in their name, a la Little Genesee, Genesee
Junction... but no plain Genesee, NY!!
I appreciate your input.

Subject: Geneseo vs. Genesee Falls
Geneseo is a small college town south of Rochester. A branch of the State University
of NY is located there.
Genesee Falls is the township of which Portageville is part. There are no cities in
this area-------all small towns and villages------some only 4 corners. Portageville has
only 2 streets but has a roadside hotel that has been in existence for many, many years.
In 1972 during a hurricane the river rose so high the watermark in this hotel was at eye
The Genesee River flows through most of this area. There is a State Park named
Letchworth Park. In this park the Genesee River has a series of falls which is called
"The Grand Canyon of the East".
The town of Genesee Falls is in Wyoming County. Just north of Portageville
is Livingston County. South of Portageville is Allegany County.
Do a google search Letchworth Park and you will get many sites that tell about the
park and the history of the area..
Let me know if you have any other questions.
