Attempt to Break Jail.
Last Saturday evening Under Sheriff BUXTON heard a noise at the north
end of the jail and on going around there, in the jail yard, he saw two
Irishmen within prying off the iron gates, which they had previously sawed
with a case knife. As BUXTON presented his pistol, they concluded to desist
in their operations. On examining it was found that four bars had been thus
sawed, so that a little prying would break them. The Irishmen are in for
burglary and grand larceny, committed, we believe, in Portageville.
Another Business Change.
James M. DARLING, formerly of the firm of DARLING & BRECK, has bought
out Orrin OTIS, Grocer, and will hereafter carry on the Grocer's business,
in all its branches, at the old stand of Orrin OTIS.--Who next? At this
rare property and business change hands here, who can be sure, when he goes
to bed at night, that he will not be sold out when he gets up in the
All we know about H. WEST, Jeweler in Castile, is that he
patronizes the printer, and pays him too. This makes us think he intends to
do business about right.

Death of Mrs. Adams.
Mrs. ADAMS, relict of the late John Quincy ADAMS, died at her residence
