I’m trying to locate a long-lost pal of mine, Wayne WERNER, who once lived in Attica , NY . We knew each other in high school (ca. 1952/3) and in college (ca. 1955/6). If Wayne is “listening” or anyone knows his whereabouts, please have him contact me off list. If you know he is unable to respond, please pass that sad info on to me.
My apologies for deviating somewhat from list protocol.
Greetings from SW Oklahoma.
I am hopeful someone can help me find information about my g grandfather and
gg grandparents who lived in Strykersville area in the early 1800s. Here is
what I know about them.
John M WARES, (my gg grandfather) b 22 Dec 1801 in Berkshire, Vermont to
Moses Wares and Rebecca Allen. I found him in Strykersville in about 1820
when he was one of 4 men who built the first grist mill on the west side of
the village. (source: Strykersville Sketches) He married his first wife,
Sophronia RICHARDSON about 1825/6. She was born in 1803 in Dracut, Mass and
died Mar 1840. They had 4 children: John R (b 1827), William (b 1829),
Moses (b 1832), and Mary E (b. 1839). I found Sophronia listed as one of
the chartered group of the Strykersville Baptist Church in 1833. Another of
this group was William RICHARDSON whom I believe was Sophronia's brother.
(source: Strykersville Sketches)
After Sophronia died, John married his second wife, Mary R COLE about
1840/1. I believe she died between 1841 and 1844/5 when he married again in
1845. They had one child, my ggrandfather, Judson Taylor born in 1841. I
cannot find anything about Mary R Cole. John M died in Niles, Michigan. He
had a monument erected in the family plot there on which is listed his 3
wives and their ages and dates of death. Unfortunately, this side of the
monument is very weathered and largely illegible. I made a rubbing in the
hope I could glean a bit more info but to no avail. As far as I can tell
from the obits of my ggrandfather and his brothers, they were born in
Strykersville. I believe wives #1 and #2 died and are buried in
Strykersville since according to the cemetery records in Michigan they are
not buried there. There may have been another child, perhaps named David
WARES since there is a record in the Michigan cemetery records but no
information other than plot number and no gravestone.
Thanking you in advance, Jan Volkmann
For those who don't receive mail from Footnote, I thought I'd pass on
that for the month of June their Civil War records are free to view.
Enjoy & happy hunting.
