I find it impossible to respond to the Roll Call request for three names,
since I only know one -- here goes:
I'm searching for the parents/other family of my great-grandfather, Ward
Wixon. Our family tradition says he was born in Putnam County, NY, in
December, 1830, but that he was orphaned some time thereafter. We know there
were a lot of Wixon/Wixson/Wixom people in that area at that time, but we
don't know the names of his parents and so cannot connect him to any of those
The first actual documentation we have of Ward is his appearance in the 1850
Census, where he was listed as living with the family of James Barger, in
Putnam Valley Township -- which fits with the family story that Ward was
sent, after the deaths of his parents -- and possibly after a stint in an
orphanage -- to live with a shoemaker named Barger, who taught him the
Family stories contain hints that Ward may have had a sister, perhaps named
Sarah (who remained in New York and died there later); and perhaps another
relative named Caroline.
We do not know the names of Ward's relatives or when they died (one story
says his father died in some accident involving a horse...). After his
appearance in the 1850 Census, we do not know what Ward was doing until he
showed up in Illinois in 1860, getting married...
Someone has suggested that in about the right time period there was a Sarah
Wixon living with a Van Wyck family, in the Putnam area; but my efforts to
follow that up have not yet turned up anything.
Ward seems to have been an unusual name in the Wixons, before
great-grandfather was born, so it's possible it is some sort of family
connection, perhaps to his mother's family...
So: if you have a reference to a Ward Wixon in Putnam County in the 1830's,
'40's, or '50's, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Or if you know a Ward
family associated with a Wixon; or a Sarah Wixon, whether or not with the Van
Wyck family, after 1830...
(Family stories say Ward took a NY paper later in life out west, and one day
saw an obituary for his sister -- so while I don't know what paper that might
have been, or even when (most likely between 1870 and 1920), such an obit
might have clues for me, if I can locate it -- but I don't even know if Sarah
may have been married and have a different last name...)
If anything here rings a bell for anyone, please let me know, won't you?

Lake Secor is not far from Mahopac Falls . Take Route 6N to the
Presbyterian church on the hill, go around the church and then turn
left. That will take you to Lake Secor, or you can get there from the
Taconic State Parkway. As far as I know the lake is still there!
I have been away, so I am a little late with this roll call.
