Oldest Resident of Orleans Co. Dies
Mrs. Anna SLOPER AMOS, the oldest known resident of Orleans County, died at her daughter's home at Waterport, Monday, [26 March 1928] having passed her 101st birthday last Armistice Day.
Born in Hickling, England, she married John AMOS when she was 24. He came first to this country to make a home for his bride, and she followed soon after, having a memorable twenty-three weeks' trip on a sailing ship.
Their first home was in Batavia, whence they moved after a few years to Oak Orchard on the Ridge, where they remained until Mr. Amos died in 1893. From their extremely modest beginnings, he had become a successful live stock farmer at the time of his death.
Mrs. Amos in recent years has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Sate THOMPSON, of Waterport. She was active mentally up to the time of her death and she was able to move herself around the house, although she required care because her sight failed some years ago and her hearing was also affected. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary GIBBS, of Hickling, England; two sons, John and Benjamin, of Oak Orchard; two daughters, Mrs. Anna HANDY of Detroit, and Mrs. Thompson, of Waterport. Her descendants include twenty-four grandchildren, forty great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of England.
Note: I have taken the liberty of added her death date in brackets and capitalizing last names in order to make them stand out. Otherwise, obit is exactly as in newspaper.
