Just in case this is of interest to someone...
Ancestry has these records in a searchable index for all (birth, marriage
and death) and have the reclaim the records images online too.
But not only that, if you are a NYS resident you can access Ancestry's NY
records databases for free!

While I find the indexes there by year, I have not been able to discover how
one searches them - other than knowing what year someone was born in, paging
through the PDF for said year, finding the surname and then one's relative.
