Tiffany,
Almost any general history of the Civil War will mention Henry Halleck as he
started in a well known position, moved up and had a few arguements with the
brass while chief of Generals, one of the last positions as chief of staff
for General Grant. Certain that he had pocket change for cigars and whiskey
at all times.
I met another Henry Halleck several years ago who worked for the same
company until the whole place fell apart. He is related to this famous
general.
Again all the history books whether general or specific will have a lot more
on this man, he was involved in the second battle of Bull Run, he was now a
Major General and had been transferred from the West to be general in chief.
My Brady (famous photographer) book does not have an index as such but I am
certain that a number of pictures exist of him. I do not have the book on
the generals at this time, it has been loaned. There should be a number of
items on the web about him too.
Here is a short bio:
http://www.civilwarhome.com/halleckbio.htm
and it has a picture.
Here is a more unbiased bio:
http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/books/cg&csa/Halleck-HW.htm
and the picture is more formal and commanding. Note that he was born in
Westerville, Oneida county, north and not far away.....
Golden Gate Park (San Francisco) has a statue of him in the East end:

Yahoo search came up with 3690 citations alone for General Henry Halleck,
you can have fun for a long time with this amount of information online.
There must be 30 to 50 books on the Civil War in my library that will
mention the General, therefore any good library will have a number of
entries on him and the War.
From a very hot North Carolina.

My cousin thinks he maybe our ancestor. If anyone is
familiar with him, would you please send me his name
and it would be really great if you knew where I could
find a picture of him (if one does exist)-Its a lot to
ask..but thank you for any help that you are able to
provide.
sincerely yours
