Sherry and List,
It was not obvious how to answer the earlier email or what could be done,
searching the web no special ideas on this subject especially as to a short
version were found. Given some time a short version could be written but
what should be left out or what should be the main points?
Dorothy Kubik is a newer author and this book is being sold by the DCHA
A Free Soil--A Free People: The Anti-Rent War in Delaware County, New York
by Dorothy Kubik. Focuses on the human side of the story of the Anti-Rent
War, and how it helped to further shape American democracy. $15.00
I have had a short but pleasant conversatin with Dorothy and she seems
knowledgeable and pleasant. Have not read the book, but expect to order it.
An older book ,1945(!) titled Tin Horns and Calico by Henry Christman is
always regarded as The book on this subject. However it is presumed that a
copy would be hard to find but I checked on booksearch and found a number of
copies plus a later paperback version available. So either book is a good
option, but a lot of reading.
I am aware that there are a couple more but can not find anything to mention
at this time
On the Delaware County website, the Jay Gould book online has some
information as to events in Delaware Co. but the author is biased as his
father was one that was tarred and feathered.
And also there is a story of some of the people in that struggle:
Bogardus, Mary. CRISIS IN THE CATSKILLS.
Cornwallville, NY: Hope Farm Press, 1976. Reprint of the 1960 edition. The
fictionalized story of the Delaware County Anti-Rent War of 1844-45
There is still a portrait hanging in the Delaware County Courthouse of Osman
Steele, and a small brass plaque says "Born at Walton on August 16, 1809.
Was murdered at Andies [sic} while in discarge of his duty as Undersheriff
on August 7, 1845 by an organized band of men disguised as Indians to resist
the laws"
As always, searching the Delaware Co web using the picosearch will normally
find any references to your family names or places or even events.

Who is the "Steele", and what is this uprising all about?
Can someone
please
direct me to a good, concise website or something, where I could get
more
information about this incident? As far as I know, my Steel(e)s (my
father's
paternal side) were not in the Delaware Co. area, but on my
father's
maternal
side they were there (GEE/PARKS/MILLER). I would like to read some
thorough,
but concise, information about this to help me sort out some of the
unknown
parts of my family's history, and see if anything connects. Thank
you,
all!
