One correction, NY villages are part of towns. e.g. I was born in the
Village of Brockport, Town of Sweden. Some villages are in more than
one town. My sister was born in the current hospital, which is just
outside Sweden in the Town of Clarkson. Brockport has since annexed the
hospital so babies born there now have a birthplace of Village of
Brockport, Town of Clarkson. A few places (e.g. East Rochester) are
both a town and a village with the same boundaries and government. Some
towns contain more than one village, many have no villages at all.
Note that NY uses the term "town", there is no subdivision called a

when doing research in NYS, one has to remember this:
the state is divided into counties
the counties are divided into cities, villages or townships townships
are areas outside the city or village boundaries
so, what you said about your birth certificate was :
born in village of Margaretville, county of Middletown, NYS
that means you were born within the village boundaries
if it said, born in New Kingston, township of Roxbury, NYS that means
they were born outside the village of Roxbury boundaries.
when doing NYS research you need to find a very good gazatteer and be
sure you know where all the boundaries are located.
for example. my gg grandmother was living with her married daughter
near village of Wells Bridge, town of Unadilla, Otsego Co, NY. However,
the exact physical location of their property was actually acrossed the
river from Wells Bridge--town of Sidney, Delaware Co, NYS...so when I
went looking for vital records in town of Unadilla, they weren't found,
but as soon as I realized where the township and county boundaries were,
I could see that I needed to request the records from the town of Sidney
hope this helps some.

Subject: [NYDELAWA-L] town question
I am hoping someone can help clear this or maybe help me make
Information regarding births in my Grandfather's family came
from Roxbury Town Clerk. The information states as follows:
" Born in New Kingston, Town of Roxbury". Does this mean
Village of New Kingston, Town of Roxbury? I am uncertain what this
means. I was born in Margaretville but my birth information doesn't
state "Born in Margaretville, Town of Middletown" however it does say
Village of Margaretville.
Any information is appreciated. Thanks to all in advance.
Kindly, Tamara Sanford
