I emailed the "Mystery" digest edition to a computer minded friend who
designs software, etc..here's his response to your recent problem.
"I guess from looking at the attachments that people are having a problem
opening *.pdf files. When they go to open them the Corel program opens and
they have nada. If this is the case then - -I won't tell what they didn't
do; just what they need to do now.
go to START, CONTROL PANEL, FOLDER OPTIONS, FILE TYPES, look for PDF under
extensions, OPENS WITH:, CHANGE, select ACROBAT READER, OK and the problem
should be solved.
The reason: when you load in software, it looks for programs and
then automatically associates, to open, certain file extensions. Corel
automatically associated with certain files and when they loaded in Acrobat
after, they didn't manually relinquish the extension .pdf to Acrobat and
Corel maintained its link. Most software can't automatically take over
ownership to extensions.
Another fix, which is probably easier, now that I go through the process
Right click on the file, OPEN WITH, select ACROBAT, check ALWAYS USE
THIS PROGRAM TO OPEN THESE FILES, OK.
This is the simplest way to correct the problem.
I don't always remember the easiest way right off the bat - just the way
to get things done for the problem. The end justifies the means; but the
means when it comes to computers has to have the user in mind.
So, there are two ways; both will work."
He adds that he doesn't mind being known as "the fixer" and doesn't
helping out with computer program problems...said it might help him out in
the future...he plans on moving back to Schoharie county from NYC sometime
in the future and would like to set up a business.
