From the Unadilla Times - Sidney's oldest resident, Mrs. Ida G.
of 33 Bridge St., widow of a Civil War veteran, dies Friday in The
Sidney, after a long illness.
She was born April 8, 1857 in Rockdale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arvine
Burroughs, and was married in 1879 in Sidney to Herbert M. Gates. Later,
they moved to Moodus, Conn., where Mr. Gates died in 1913. She was the only
remaining widow of the Civil War receiving a pension from the state of
Mrs. Gates resided in Sidney for about 20 years. She was a collector of old documents,
may of which date back to the Civil War. Up to two years ago, Mrs. Gates had been in good
health and daid she hopes to live to be 100.
