We have a very early Catherine Akerly (and sometimes sp. Ackerly, and earlier Eglie)
Page 34 of the Yaple Family in America...
Johann Nicholas Yaple,*(3rd child of Philip Henry Yaple and his 2nd wife Susanna Vesqueau
"m 1788 Catherine Akerly (Eglie) b ca 1769 d 6 Feb 1854. Resided Hopkins Plkace,
Dry Brook, NY"
Elsewhere in the book (pg 331) it says "Hanicle [his nickname from a combination of
JoHANN and NICHOLas]
married 17 Feb 1789 Marbletown, Ulster County, NY." And almost the same info is
repeated on pg 333: "...Catherine Akerly, daughter of Benjamin Akerly, she was born
October 9, 1769. Both were then of Middletown, NY..." This section taken from a
letter from Winfield Scott,Commissioner, when Ann E. Smith wrote for information regarding
her relative's Revolutionary War papers. (Johann Nicholas Yaple sometimes refered to
as John Nicholas Yaple)
Page 331... "Nicholas and Catherine resided at what was first called Akerley Town,
afterward Lumberville, and now Arena, Delaware Co., NY. Catherine's father owned
almost all the land now covered by Arena, and on her marriage gave her a farm there. That
is how Nicholas and Catherine came to settle there. The old house where they lived is
still standing and occupied as a dwelling and seems a substantial as when first built over
a hundred years ago..., (this was in 1894 from the Yaple Record, by Ann E. Smith)"
Page 335 shows Catherine Yaple's application as widow of John N Yeaple "who
served in the Revolutionary war as a Private..." And there is a whole section in the
book on the children of this union. This earlier Catherine Akerly and John N Yaple had 7
There are some other Akerly's listed in this book but thought going back as far as I
could would be the most help. You should probably be looking at Benjamin Akerly, who must
have been among some of the first settlers of the area.
Hope this is helpful.

I am also interested in the Ackerly/Ackley family of that area. I am
looking for Lemuel and Catherine Ackley whose daughter, Harriet Amelia
Ackley married Henry H. Mead, son of Leonard Wesley Mead of Roxbury. Don't
know if there is any connection...
Any information would be helpful.

Subject: [NYDELAWA-L] Ackerly of Arena
My nephew asked me to find out information on his great great
grandfather Daniel B. Ackerly who came from Arena.
Daniel was born 17 Aug 1817 and died Beaverkill, t/o Rockland, Sull Co 19
Jan 1900. 82y 5m 2d
Just recently I was a the town clerk's office and the only thing listed
regarding his death was that it was unattended and that he died of cerebral
apoplexy. No parents and no known obituary or will.
Daniel was married to Rebecca Jane Close d/o Elijah. Her death
certificate was more confused. Her son Aaron gave the info and a birthdate
of 4 or 9 March 1830, her age at death was listed as 82y 10 m 10d, BUT she
had was appears to be 2 death dates- one 25 Jan 1913, the other 30 Jan 1913.
As you can see these dates just don't work out.
Aaron also stated that the last time he had seen her alive was on
the 19th of Jan. Aaron, or maybe someone not paying attention, wrote her
parents were Elijah Close and Rebecca Jane Close, maybe that is correct, but
it was one of those things that "didn't feel right".
It seems that Daniel with the B. middle initial is descended from
Benjamin, but is he a grandson or son. Some think he is the son of John.
And, did Daniel have any brothers or sisters?
any help here greatly appreciated, evelyn
